Overview

All his life, Royal Murdoch (1860 â 1938) has been a law unto himself. First a soldier, then a pioneer in Northern British Columbia, he became the long-serving mayor of the town that owes its existence to him. There he lived two lives, one with Emma, his wife, and the other with Yvonne, his Indian mistress. Now, as he lies old and dying, the forces that he has let loose inside his world bring discord instead of quiet order to his final days. Emma, his wife for half a century, dreams of peace in her last years. She calls for Ruby and Jeremy, her children, to support her during her death watch. To help nurse Royal she hires an innocent young Indian woman, Mary Ann, who becomes the destructive element in the mix of conflicts and desires Royal has fostered. A study of characters faced suddenly with both new and ancient stresses and fueled by a swiftly-moving story, Royal Murdoch â forty years beyond its original publication - is still an eventful read.
