Overview

Miklós Rózsa consciously kept a church-and-state relationship between his film and concert music, and as a result his concert works have never been entirely neglected. Still, the recent campaign on Koch has shown much greater number and breadth than one might expect. Rózsa clearly left a big sandbox for musicians to play in. His Violin Concerto's use of folk material may not be as well-documented as that of his compatriot Bartók, but as violinist Robert McDuffie shows, he knew the instrument just as well. Technical demands are less of an issue in the cello concerto, and Lynn Harrell keeps the work focused on his instrument's melancholy tone color. McDuffie and Harrell co-manage the spotlight in the Theme and Variations better than the piece's original dedicatees -- Heifetz and Piatigorsky -- perhaps because they can no longer turn to the late composer to mediate. In any case, the disc gives the violinist a welcome opportunity to shine, and McDuffie has a lot to say in this music. For a composer like Rózsa, eager to enter the repertory, it's a welcome conversation to be a part of.
