Meet the Author

Born in Duluth, Minnesota, the setting for her first novel Relic, Kathleen West spent the first half of her life struggling to stay alive. At the age of four, her family was scattered and she lost contact with both parents and her four brothers. She was placed in an orphan home and later adopted. In a life filled with abuse and abandonment, she found her passion in writing.

At the age of 23 she married and at age 27 was the divorced mother of two. Three years of trying to hold her small family together after the divorce nearly broke her spirit and she, along with her children, became homeless. Strangers came to aide the family and she never forgot the kindness and love that was shown. The trip up from such a tragic beginning was tough, but endowed with an indomitable spirit, an incomparable sense of humor, a strong, sharp mind, and a passion to survive and do more, she overcame and conquered.

Today Ms. West is actively involved in helping other people in her work with Good Samaritans of Garland, Inc. She has developed programs to help families, like her own, move from poverty to empowerment.

Her writing career began in college when she took a summer job as a copywriter at a local radio station. West loves to tell the story of how she was asked in the interview if she could write copy. Her answer was yes, although she had no idea what “copy” was. The instructions to write a :30 and a :60 gave her a clue. She successfully wrote two commercials and was offered the job. Since then she has written everything from poetry to technical documents, corporate video scripts for Pat Summerall Productions to company newsletters, stories to research papers, magazine articles to Dear John letters. As long as she is allowed to write, West is content.
