Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
African American third grader Ruby Booker is going to school with her three older and immensely popular brothers for the first time. Nevertheless, her brothers will not overshadow her: She plans to show the world that she is a star in her own rights. Many younger siblings find themselves in this exact predicament and will find strength and motivation in Ruby's spirit. Although the story might bring comfort and familiarity to those readers, they will have to get past both distracting slang and clumsy writing: Ruby's teacher tells her, "Marcellus was one of the best students I ever had. I had him in the third grade, and now he's grown up to be such a multitalented, extremely intelligent Hope Road student." Newton's blackandwhite illustrations break up the space but add little to the story. This series kickoff will publish simultaneously with its second volume, Trivia Queen, 3rd Grade Supreme (9780545017619). (Fiction. 710)

    daughter loves

my daughter is in 1st grade and reads chapter books. we've had a hard time finding books that focus on african american girls. this book fits that. she enjoys reading and is interested in reading about ruby. we read aloud together and i must admit, i like the story line too. this book is excellent for young girls, especially african american girls. it helps build self esteem, develop an interest in reading, and mirrors positive african american life. a must buy. however, i do have a hard time finding these in the book store, they usually have to order them. that's the downside in all of this. worth the effort

    Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book demonstration many things for me and my daughter, but more than the learning value, it held my daughter attention. She has read this book 4 times. I love the characters and the way they are revealed.

I must say anyone would love this book - boy or girl. Especially if you have more than one child your household and are trying to find your place in it. I love Ruby's spunk. AND I love all her brothers because this struggle is played out in household all over the world. Marcellus! - who does not know him.

Brand New School, Brave New Ruby (Ruby and The Booker Boys Series #1)

Watch Out for Ruby! This firecracker will teach young girls that it's ok to be different and afraid, especially in new situations. The books colorful description and importance to stand out from the crowd will be an instant favorite.

Brand New School, Brave New Ruby (Ruby and The Booker Boys Series #1)

While reading Ruby and The Booker Boys.. I slowly recalled the fact that I was just like this in the third grade.. This smart, brave, and sassy eight year old has won the hearts of many African American families'including my own'. She reminded me that family is ever lasting. FINALLY, we have our own series to enjoy. This can be compared to Ramona the Brave and Amber Brown. Teaches our children to be much more diverse, friendly, and social! I think this would be a great read for my 6 year old little brother because it will teach him to be SO much more social and appreciate other races as much as he appreciates his. I plan to share this book series with him.

    Great book for female readers

I purchased this book for my daughter after she looked at the cover and saw a girl that looked like her. She loved the book from the very beginning. She related to the characters and the situation. It was a great experience for her. She was excited about the themes and enjoyed the entire book. She actually read it in two days! Great book we got #2 by the end of the week and will be pre-ordering #3. Mr. Barnes has done a great job and I look forward to having my daugher explore some of his other titles

    The Best Series For Girls!!!

I was lucky enough to read books one and two before the release...and let me tell you...my daughteres love Ruby!!! This series is written with real sibling-parent speak. Not that watered down, Disney speak. All of the characters are likeable, even One of the Booker Boys, the rowdy, yet loveable Roosevelt. When this series hits the stores I'm sure it'll be bigger than Junie B. Jones, The Cheetah Girls, and all of those cheesy fairy books. Can't wait for July 2008! I've already ordered two copies of each book, but theres nothing like going into the store on the day of the release and being afew more for my daughters' classroom. Sincerely, Uncle Don
