Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Deborah Steinig
In this early reader, Max's toy robots interfere with his big sister Ruby's soccer game. The plot line has appeal. However, the characterization is thin, even by the standards of early readers. Neither the pictures nor the text do much to distinguish the characters. Instead, the author seems to assume that the reader will already be familiar with the characters from the animated "Max & Ruby" television series. Additionally, a mismatch between the book's language and content make it an awkward fit for any age group. Leveled "Station Stop 1" by the publisher, the book does have the simple—almost choppy—syntax of the easiest readers. However, some of the vocabulary and concepts seem geared toward a slightly older reader: knowledge of soccer and cheerleading is required. This book might be appropriate for a struggling reader in first or second grade, and may fit a specific pedagogic niche for a reading teacher. An adult looking to enjoy a read-aloud with a child would do better to choose one of the original Max and Ruby books by Rosemary Wells, whose zany humor and flair for storytelling are completely lost in this adaptation.
