Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The English have a long history with fairies, from ancient times to Shakespeare's Titania and Oberon, to Victorian's obsession with fairies, Barrie's Tinker Bell and Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies. British author Meadows has established quite an industry of fairy books (Weather, Jewel, Fashion, Holiday). The "Rainbow Magic" series introduces the seven Rainbow Fairies, one for each color, with a simple story line and a plot borrowed from the (French) fairies of "Sleeping Beauty." Because he was not invited to a ball, Jack Frost has put a curse on Fairyland, robbing it of all color and banishing the Rainbow Fairies forever. Like the ballet's Lilac Fairy, Queen Titania mitigates the curse by dispatching the fairy sisters to earth's Rainspell Island until they can find a way to return. Rachel and Kirsty just happen to be vacationing on the island, where they discover Ruby and vow to help her find the other six so color can be restored to Fairyland; that is all for this first book. One might wish the ending were not such a blatant pitch for the next story in the series. The American edition changes the names of two fairies, but Ruby remains much the same (note her resemblance to Barker's poppy fairy, who wears a similar scarlet silk dress). These little creatures, with their preteen fashions and a pleasant but undemanding storyline, will probably appeal to young readers with a taste for pretty magic, but they are much too tame and derivative to summon up any real mystery or wonder. 2003, Little Apple/Scholastic, Ages 7 to 9.

Excellent book for a broad age range

I bought this book hoping for a series both my daughters would enjoy. In terms of reading level, it was an excellent fit. It was a slight challenge for the youngest, but she enjoyed the story enough to complete it. It was a simple read for the eldest, but she compensated by reading through every other book of the Rainbow series that was available through our local library. We'll be coming into the store soon to buy the books the local library didn't have so that we know what happened to Kirsty & Rachel, and to see what the other fairy series are like. I'm also hoping a paper doll book of the various fairies will be produced someday since I and my daughters enjoyed the various fairies' styles.I do think this book missed a teachable moment, though. The crisis in the story is created by a moment of forgetfulness & neglect on the part of the rainbow fairies. Jack Frost's reaction is certainly too extreme, but I wish the author had taken the opportunity to teach the value of a sincere apology by having the fairies apologize to Jack Frost. Kids are well served, I think, when they see honest, authentic & sincere apologies given & forgiveness granted, and it's also worth teaching that there's rarely only one side of a disagreement at fault. It didn't need to be anything preachy or involved, just something along the lines of "We're so sorry we forgot your invitation. We never intended to make you feel left out. Please forgive us for our mistake."Just my 2 cents' worth!

    Young Girls Love This Series!

Given as a birthday gift for my 7 year-old granddaughter, but the almost 5 year-old wanted her own copy, too. (I gave her another book in the series just two weeks later when she turned 5, and that made her very happy and feel very grown up.)

    for girls AND boys

My 4 year old daughter and 5 year old son love the rainbow fairies books. We have done the seven rainbow fairies and have just started the weather fairies 'looking forward to the party fairies next.' Would be great if they were available in audio tapes for the car!

    Blah

This book is boring, and has no life or character to it. All the characters are the same. The good people are nice. The bad people are mean. That's it. And the series repeats itslef in every book. My little sister loves these books, but they are just soo awful and bland.

    Wonderful story.

My granddaughter received 'Ruby' as a birthday gift and was so hoping for more (which were not yet available in the US). She loves the 'Rainbow Magic' series and has added 'Amber' to her collection. She is so looking forward to the next releases in the series.
