Editorial Reviews

USA Today
Gonthier presents her case in a well-written, humanistic manner ... gives even the best-behaved workers something to think about.
Publishers Weekly
While bad manners aren't often cited as a workplace "failure," they do affect productivity and service at the office. Rude Awakenings: Overcoming the Civility Crisis in the Workplace addresses impolite business behavior, such as interrupting others, setting impossible deadlines, sending crabby e-mails and bullying co-workers. Author Giovinella Gonthier, a former ambassador, offers suggestions for various situations, from conferences and meetings to restrooms and copy machine areas. Although the likely audience for her book is managers who have to deal with impoliteness (will ill-mannered employees really pick this book up?), the tips are valuable for anyone working in an office environment. Rude Awakening: Overcoming the Civility Crisis in the Workpl

Rude Awakening: Overcoming the Civility Crisis in the Workplace written by Giovinella Gonthier. The book is 256 pages, which makes it a quick read. The target audience is management and the content is directed towards issues in the workplace. However, I believe this book and the information can pertain to anyone interested in civility. For example, Gonthier discusses the etiquette of cell phone use. She gives the scenario that your phone goes off during a meeting. The solution to that is to turn it off before hand. Change meeting to class and the solution is the same. Everything Gonthier points out is common sense, unfortunately, many people forget about civility.
Gonthier was born in Africa and has served as an ambassador to the United Nations in New York City and Washington D.C. The information she gives and the stories she tells are from her own personal experience. This is interesting because she gives a different kind of spin to the information. She reflects on her knowledge and observations of other cultures in order to create her book. The most important contributions the book made to the understanding of civility were the realistic problems, solutions and examples. This made the book relatable and allowed me a better understanding of the material. While I read the book I caught myself thinking of my own experiences or saying to myself, "That is so true." Overall, I recommend this book to anyone (older than junior year of high school) because it is beneficial and the information is useful.
