Giuliani found his true calling when he was elected mayor of New York City. With his strict policies and devotion to cleaning up the crime ridden streets of New York, Giuliani played a key part in revitalizing the city, bringing crime rates down and tourism rates up. But as his time in office progressed, his administration was marred by controversy, and it seemed as though he might quietly retire from politics.

All that changed, though, on September 11, 2001. Mayor Giuliani responded quickly and decisively to the terrorist attacks, working at Ground Zero to help people get rescued and hospitalized, and ensuring the safety of all New Yorkers. In the days and weeks following the attacks, Giuliani became the voice of hope and revitalization in the damaged city.

With his heroic actions revitalizing his flagging political career and redrawing the national spotlight, Giuliani's future in politics seems assured. It is a future that might just find this native New Yorker in Washington, maybe even in the White House.

In plenty of time for the 2008 presidential election, this biography of a leading Republican candidate has a journalistic flavor. Sharp begins the inveterate New Yorker's story before he was born, with his father Harold, who served a criminal sentence in Sing Sing State Prison while in his mid-20s, and later worked as an enforcer for a loan-sharking business, and his mother Helen, who valued learning and education. Rudy Giuliani was their only child. In Sharp's vivid telling, readers take in Giuliani's development as a fascinating, sometimes "oddball," personality—a witty prankster, a tough guy, an opera buff. Giuliani seriously considered becoming a Catholic priest, and then, when he concluded that celibacy was not for him, a surgeon, but his lifelong interest in current events and politics led him to law school. A judicial clerkship was his springboard to the U.S. Attorney's office in New York City, where he honed a reputation as a crack prosecutor. Then, it was onward and upward to the U.S. Department of Justice, private law practice, and eventually the Big Apple mayoralty and his unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate in 2000. Along the way, Sharp does not shy away from the details of Giuliani's personal life (such as his first marriage to his cousin which, as his own staff warned him, created a "weirdness factor") and his reputedly prickly personality. Sharp analyzes Giuliani's tenure as mayor with attention to difficult issues such as police brutality and racism. In her description of Giuliani's actions after the terror attacks of 9/11, she also credits him as "a calm, steady hand in the middle of chaos." The book closes with a look at Giuliani's presidential campaign to date.This entry in the "Political Profiles" series is as un-bland and interesting as its subject.

    Excellent Political Biography

    This is a well-written and lucid account of the life and career of Rudy Giuliani. Juxtaposed against the numerous blindly complimentary and rabidly critical Giuliani bios, Sharp does a wonderful job in remaining neutral while writing a languid, yet carefully constructed account of one of America's most polarizing political figure's life. She introduces us to Giuliani's family history, treats us to a strongly-researched discussion of his formative years, and continues, without missing a beat, through his famous handling of the attacks of 9/11.

    While intended as an educational text for middle-school aged children, anyone looking to enrich their understanding of the life of Rudy Giuliani would be well served by reading this fine book. I look forward to this talented author's future work.
