Overview

College football superstar Clay Blackwell is surprised and excited to be picked as a first-round choice by the Birmingham Ruffians, a lackluster expansion franchise team desperate for players just like Clay—and willing to pay millions for them. Humphry Lyles, the owner, is a self-made man obsessed with success, and the $2 million signing bonus he offers Clay is just the start of the Program, his scheme to take the Ruffians from the cellar to the Super Bowl in a single season. The new coaching staff is led by Vance White, who will do anything to win; his brutal training methods make Marine boot camp look like a picnic, and even the most hardened NFL veterans are shocked by the viciousness he encourages. And, more ominous still, the Program includes another ingredient, a dark secret fueling the aggressive fury that means victory in the violent arenas of pro football.

Clay rebels against the sinister demands of the Program, but he signed with the Ruffians to play ball, and the vindictive White has made it unmistakably clear that the price for a position on the starting team is total submission to his soul-killing regimen, which is designed to transform his players into merciless gridiron assassins. Trapped between his conscience and a desire to join his teammates on their steamroller ride to the top, Clay faces a no-win situation. Does he sell his talent to Vance White's corrupt ambition—or stick to his guns and possibly forfeit everything he loves?

Tim Green captures all of the rich atmosphere of pro football and the colorful characters of the life he knows so well in this hard-hitting, high-tension tale of tragedy, triumph, and total dedication to a sport in which the stakes literally can be a matter of life and death.

His last few novels have all been national bestsellers hitting the charts at #22 and #30 on the New York Times Bestseller list. Tim is also the author of a memoir entitled A MAN AND HIS MOTHER: AN ADOPTED SON'S SEARCH which was featured on Entertainment Tonight, ABC's Prime Time, and in People Magazine. The movie rights to this memoir have been purchased by CBS for a movie of the week. In addition, he writes a series of chapter books for young readers set in the world of professional sports. The first novel in this series, FOOTBALL GENIUS, was released in 2007.

His writing career began at Syracuse University where he was a Rossman Scholar for Humanities, a Syracuse Scholar, an NCAA Top Six Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, and co-valedictorian of his class. Most recently, Tim received the NCAA's prestigious Silver Anniversary Award, which recognizes distinguished former student-athletes on the 25th anniversary of their intercollegiate athletic career, that have gone on to achieve personal distinction since their graduation. In 1986, he was selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons where he was a star defensive end for eight years.

Intense and Exciting, couldn't put it down

Ruffians is the perfect title for this book, with the rule breaking coaches to the 'death squad' defence. This book explores everyside of pro football from the start at college to the try outs for pro to the draft and on to playing at pro level and the partying and drug using that comes with it. This book doesn't leave any thing out it cover the good the bad and sad. It shows just how far coaches and owners will take things just to win at any cost. This book is by far the best football story I have ever read and you won't want to put it down. I recommed this book to anyone mature wheather or not you are a football fan or not.

Excellent Start For a Seemingly Great (Second) Career

Very Good book! Tim Green seems to take us inside the locker room and inside the head of a professional foothall player. I am a former football player, and although I loved the football storyline, this book explores the side of the game that know one else talks about....maybe because few know enough about it to make a reader understand. The friendships, the scandals, the emotions are all brought to life. I am excited to read more Green books!
