Ryan is a typical four year old who loves all aspects of Easter. He loves the eggs, his Easter basket and the celebrations surrounding the holiday. He has his favourite stuffed toy, a monkey that he has named Rufus. Rufus and he are inseparable and they go everywhere together. Ryan is a little boy who is learning about his faith and about life in general. He learns that Easter isn't all bunnies and treats but has a deeper meaning - it is a day to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, God's son. The author explains the meaning of the holiday in very simple, clear language so any child will understand its meaning. This is the third book in the series of Rufus and Ryan. The other two books are , "Rufus and Ryan Go to Church" and "Rufus and Ryan Say Their Prayers." The illustrations are light, cartoonish and very, very kid-friendly. I am very sure you and you whole family will enjoy this book.
My family and I have enjoyed Rufus and Ryan Celebrate Easter and I would recommend it to folks who have a pre-schooler in their life. The pictures are simple and colorful. The story keeps the attention of my three year old. It is short enough to enjoy over and over and yet contains solid material that supports the faith development of my children. I would also recommend it to someone for whom church is less familiar, even folks who only go to church sometimes or for whom this Easter will be the first time. I especially appreciate the way this book addresses feelings in its words and through the pictures. Ryan's feelings show and the adults in his life listen and talk with him. My children really identify with feelings. This book lends to our talking about our own feelings in relation to church and Jesus and Easter eggs. I appreciate that it includes both decorating eggs and going to church which is what our family does at Easter time. We have other books in our library that address one but not the other. Rufus and Ryan Celebrate Easter lifts up both what we do at Eastertime, and the message of Jesus Christ that is connected with our actions.
