All Music Guide - Jason Ankeny
What separates Rufus Wainwright and the other second-generation singers who sprang up at the same time Sean Lennon, Emma Townshend, and Chris Stills the most notable among them is that Wainwright deserves to be heard regardless of his family tree; in fact, the issue of his parentage is ultimately as immaterial as that of his sexuality -- this self-titled debut cares little for the rock clichés of an earlier generation, instead heralding the arrival of a unique and compelling voice steeped most solidly in the traditions of cabaret. Like his folks, Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, he's a superb songwriter, with a knack for elegantly rolling piano melodies and poignantly romantic lyrics; while the appearance of Van Dyke Parks and his trademark orchestral arrangements hints at an affinity for the pop classicism of Brian Wilson or Randy Newman, the vocals come straight out of opera, and although Wainwright is unlikely to be starring in La Boheme anytime soon, he conveys the kind of honest emotion sorely lacking in the ironic posing of many of his contemporaries. Maybe the kids are alright after all.

    HAUNTING

Rufus has a haunting voice, not since McKennit (sp) have I heard a voice that almost frightens me. If the voice "almost" frightens me, the lyrics definitely do. What I find facinating is his growth from album 1 to 3. Not necessarily musically (although that happens too), but spiritually in his life. I am in my 40's, he is in his very early 30's, and listening to him brings up unresolved issues in my own gay life.

    Hideously whiney and overdramatic

Poor lost Rufus. Ushered in musically by his industry parents, his songs are just junk. Wherever his self-indulgence takes him. This stuff is godawful.

    Favorite Album...Ever

This album is truly my favorite album ever. Rufus Wainwright is the most entertaining man i have ever encountered. The songs are beautifully orchestrated and laced with hints of opera and fun cabaret, but they are still a style all Rufus' own. Every time i listen to the album i hear new things. Not only is his music supremely wonderful, but his personality is the most adorable ever. This boi (boy) has so much wit, charm, charisma, flamboyance, endless fun i tell you. His live shows are the happiest moments of my life. Pure heaven. Whether it is just him and his piano or with a backup band. they are always at ornate old venues too and his voice just FILLS the halls. what a magnificent voice. the best out there, very distinctive and soothing. THen there are the fans! they are such a lovely group of people. just go to the dreamworks message board and you will see what i mean. Not only are they all divinely nice and entertaining, they also have so many fun interests that stem from rufus. I am telling you, emerse yourself in the world that is Rufus Wainwright! you will never look back

    excellent!!!!!!!

rufus, dear rufus...i come home from a hard day amidst the angry masses and listen to you and you put me at peace, despite some of your melancholy woes expressed within some of your songs. i can compare you to nothing. none of my fancy words can describe the beauty in voice, lyrics, and music that you envelop.....

great music, which there isn't much of these days

This was such a great CD! I loved it even though I am more into punk rock! Well, actually I like all kinds of music but this was great. Wainwright creates an awesome musical atmosphere that is great to listen to while doing brainwork, blah, blah, etc. I think one of his greatest songs though, which isn't on this CD is Moulin Rouge in Italian or French or whatever the heck language he sings it in. It's really beautiful.

    Just Great Music

Rufus Wainwright has a very unique style, and completely unforgettable voice. His lyrics will astound you, and his melodies and harmonies are some of the greatest I have heard in a long while. If you love Pop-Opera, or just good music, then get this CD!!! I swear to you, this CD won't let you down!

    ART over Pop

At long last we have a talented artist whose 'ouvre' is based on intelligent lyrics, impeccable music and talent. How nice to have a break from all the ''flash-in-the-pan'', ''singer-of-the-month'', pop musicspawns.

My dog ate his crap one time and I got disgusted and told him never to do it again, but he didn't obey my orders and did it again. Now I don't even kiss him anymore because it honestly sickens me. I remember once when I was 12 or so, I went to the park.

I think that Rufus is one of todays brightest stars with excellent potential. I would like to say that he is a marvelous writer and that he should be heard throughout the world everyday(no really, his stuff is that great). If this CD were a drug, I would have overdosed a long time ago. Everyone should go out and buy this CD. EVERYONE.

    INDIVIDUALITY WITH DRAMATIC DEBUT

artists debut is a fascinating interweaving of sensitive, romantic lyrics and lush often dramatc melodies, adding a little of the extrordinary to the ordinary world the artists lyrics stand as poetry on their own yet are only enhanced by his seemingly effortless vocals that weave over and under the music creating a unified piece

    Real Music!

Rufus is a delightful surprise because he actually makes music *gasp!*. Most artists today produce the same junk, but his style has its own groove. I love it presonally, its refreshing.
