Nottage wove so much of her protest against human violation rights in the congo into her play. This play needs to be savored, and slowly absorbed. When you read this book, don't feel bad for her characters; she once said "My play is not about victims, it's about survivors." Women who are forced into such horrific circumstances and end up being independent are truly survivors.

Of course, theater is meant to be seen, but read this! We all need to look beyond our borders to see what else is happening out in the world, because beyond the veil of stuff and noise that surrounds us, these issues, these far off stories, are part of us. We are participants and it is imperative that we understand this. This play has a truth that goes beyond its locality.
