Overview

A gripping YA supernatural novel set in New Orleans: TWILIGHT with a ghostly twist.

Rebecca couldn't feel more out of place in New Orleans, where she comes to spend the year while her dad is traveling. She's staying in a creepy old house with her Aunt Claudia, who reads Tarot cards for a living. And at the snooty prep school, a pack of filthy-rich girls treat Rebecca like she's invisible. Only gorgeous, unavailable Anton Grey seems to give Rebecca the time of day, but she wonders if he's got a hidden agenda. Then one night, in Lafayette Cemetery, Rebecca makes a friend. Sweet, mysterious Lisette is eager to talk to Rebecca, and to show her the nooks and crannies of the city.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Morris, a newcomer to the young adult scene, blends science fiction, history, and teen angst into an entertaining and unique story about two main characters: Rebecca, a typical fifteen-year-old, and New Orleans, the city to which she is temporarily displaced while her father is in China. Upon arriving in the Big Easy post-Katrina, Rebecca is on edge about meeting her eccentric aunt but even more anxious about attending an all-girls private academy. Snooty Helena Bowman and a complicated caste system tied to old money and even older secrets make Rebecca feel like an outsider until she meets Lisette in Lafayette Cemetery. After a handful of cryptic conversations with the mysterious Lisette, Rebecca discovers that her new friend is, in fact, a ghost. As Mardi Gras approaches, the story progresses to its climax. Anton Grey, one of the elite set, breaks rank and asks Rebecca to an insider-only party at the Bowman mansion. After Lisette's appearance at the party sends shockwaves through the upper echelon, Rebecca learns that Lisette has a score to settle with the Bowmans and makes the shocking discovery that her own fate is intricately linked to the century-old curse placed on them. This story has broad appeal because it straddles the line between ghost story and realistic fiction so well. In this more plot- than character-driven novel, Rebecca's voice is authentic enough. The real star, however, is New Orleans itself; the city's aura of intrigue is deliciously described and makes the story much richer, especially for teens who remember Katrina. Reviewer: Valerie Ott
Publishers Weekly
With this haunting love letter to New Orleans, Morris makes her YA debut, telling the story of 15-year-old Rebecca Brown, a proud New Yorker sent to live with a family friend while her father travels overseas. Ostracized as an outsider, Rebecca struggles to fit in and cope with her new surroundings. When she befriends Lisette, a ghost who has haunted the cemetery ever since her mysterious death 155 years earlier, Rebecca is drawn into an eerie story of betrayal, loss, old curses and family secrets. As Mardi Gras approaches, so does the culmination of something dark and angry that has been brewing for decades. This moody tale thoroughly embraces the rich history, occult lore and complex issues of race, ethnicity, class and culture that have defined New Orleans for centuries, turning the city into a character in its own right. Rather than shy away from the shameful or tragic moments of the past, Morris uses them to capture the city's essence. From Mardi Gras rituals to voodoo spells, Hurricane Katrina to jazz, this is a story that could only be told in New Orleans. Ages 12–up. (Aug.)
Children's Literature
Fifteen-year old Rebecca Brown is unhappy. She has been sent to New Orleans to live with Aunt Claudia while her father is away on business in China. Aunt Claudia lives in a shabby, eclectic house and reads Tarot cards for tourists at Jackson Square. Rebecca misses her friends back in New York City. Even though popular Anton Grey is friendly, Rebecca does not really fit in with the other teens. She is strangely attracted to the old cemetery near Aunt Claudia's house where she meets Lisette, a teenaged ghost with a secret. Tension builds as everyone prepares for the social whirl of Mardi Gras. At one of the many balls, when Helena collapses, Rebecca learns of the curse that plagues Helena's prominent family. She also learns of a connection that exists between her, Helena, and Lisette. Rebecca's life is endangered and powerful secrets are revealed on the night of the most elaborate parade. Readers will enjoy the peek into the world of the New Orleans' Mardi Gras season in this satisfying ghost story. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—Rebecca Brown is miserable about spending six months in New Orleans with her wacky Aunt Claudia while her father goes to China on business. A New York girl through and through, the 16-year-old must attend a stuck-up private school where she is an outsider without a prestigious family. She makes her only friend in the cemetery across the road. Rebecca soon realizes that nobody else can see or hear Lisette and comes to learn that her new companion is actually the ghost of a girl who died during the 1853 yellow fever outbreak. Rebecca's situation worsens after she begins to date rich and popular Anton Grey and becomes entangled in a centuries-old curse on one of the oldest and most powerful families in the neighborhood. A hair-raising parade-float ride during Mardi Gras ends with Rebecca's life on the line. While Morris infuses her tale with interesting facts about a historically rich city, her awkward writing style detracts from the story. Character reactions are unrealistic, particularly Rebecca's casual acceptance of a ghost, but at its best, Ruined offers a fascinating account of Mardi Gras festivities and has a chilling conclusion.—Tara Kehoe, Plainsboro Public Library, NJ

Highly recommended for teens and adults

My thoughts...This book can best be described as flavorful. The reader gets tastes of New Orleans history, Mardi Gras excitement, Haitian magic and an old-fashioned ghost story. The main character Rebecca is thrown into post-Katrina New Orleans in a house with a view of the famous Lafayette Cemetery. Curiosity gets the better of her and she finds herself face to face with a real ghost. Her aunt believe in old magic and voo-doo. She gives Rececca several warnings to stay out of the cemetery and out of the way of some of the local kids, but of course, they fall on deaf ears. Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an 150 year old curse.

Ruined was very well written. The characters were interesting and like-able. The plot was fast-moving and very interesting. The history of Mardi Gras created a great background for the story. I actually found it fascinating. There must have been tons of research done to complete this novel. There were several themes included in the story including racism. Many of scenes described old New Orleans, an area which is rich in history-good and bad. The ending was a bit predictable, but there was quite a bit of foreshadowing in the form of visions that gave clues. It was very well written and kept me turning pages until the end.

As for cons, I really can't think of any. It wasn't very scary, but I didn't open this book expecting to be frightened. I would recommend this book to kids 12 and up as well as adults. It was very enjoyable.

    A great surprise!

I was looking at books online when I saw this book in the suggestion box. I was blown away! I could not put this book down. I originally thought it would be a common ghost story, but I was wrong. It had unique twists and turns. I LOVED how it had things coming that I didn't even expect. I am reading it again because it was so good. It had the right blend of mystery and romance. It wasn't too lovey-dovey, and it wasn't all mystery. I felt like I could really understand Rebecca and her thinking. When an author can do that...she did her job! Great read! Definately recommending it to my friends!

    not to be continued

personally, i am tired of reading books and then finding out it is a series. so when i read this book and it actually had a ending i was exstatic. Ruined was a great book too. i loved every moment of it. the fact that i was reading it while studying for finals was probably a bad idea. the plot is original and i did not see the twist of an ending coming until i was actually reading it. i highly recommend this book.

    Fabulous

I thought I would never find a book for teens my age without a single mention of vampires.Well written, addictive like a drug, once its over you feel something compelling you to keep reading. Lisette is the perfect New Orleans ghost. Anton and Rebecca have perfect chemistry.Perfect for hot Summers.I recommended these items because Green Day's latest album goes great with this book and the second Pirate move will satisfy your new fascination with Voodoo.

    story with potential absolutely ruined.

I had seen this book several times while scanning the shelves and was always intrigued because I was in a sci-fi faze and I have been to new orleans. Finally I bought it. The book started off really vague and choppy(nothing poetic in the writing) I think the author tries to make the reader sorry for the girl but I never did because she was such a petty jerk. Her thought process cant be related to because its so unrealistic.(the author tries to develop the character through her thoughts but it doesn't help the story and makes you think "yet another author who read twilight and decided to write a book loosely based on its plot.") Instead of creatively keeping the reader in the dark, she will just have the characters break off their sentence or run away. its comical. The characters are under developed and stupid. it is a shame because the story has a lot of potential but the character development is a big issue. I must that once the story picked up I didn't put it down but still noticed the things that bothered me. Some readers might not be bothered by this writing so give it a whirl. I just want to worn you if you are big on characters and intriguing writing.

    a good YA ghost story

Rebecca Brown is a fifteen year-old girl, living in NYC, who is suddenly shipped off by her father to stay with her Aunt Claudia in New Orleans, while he is off to work in China.

Rebecca finds New Orleans to be strange and the girls at her new school to be very stand-offish and cliquey. Though warned away by her aunt, Rebecca is drawn to the nearby Lafayette Cemetery, where she meets a dishelved girl named Lisette. Rebecca finds that everyone around her is keeping secrets and she is determined to find out the truth. Even if it means alienating the very cute and popular Anton Grey, who is part of the privileged group in the Garden District.

I enjoyed this debut YA novel. New Orleans was the perfect locale for a ghost story, set in the Garden District and the backdrop of Carnival and Mardi Gras, old curses and voodoo. Aunt Claudia reads tarot cards and tells fortunes for tourists, but seems to have a real gift. Rebecca doesn't care about fitting in with snobby girls, who care about nothing but debuts and belonging to exclusive societies forthe rich. She befriends a ghost and searches for the truth. This was a really good ghost story!

    New Orleans calling you home

I really liked this book. It was interesting and haunting. The history of New Orleans is tantalizing. Ruined showed the voodoo atmosphere. However, I would have liked to see a little more developement in the characters' relationships. And a few parts were a little far fetched. But all around, a good read.

I hate it and I love it.

Since her father has a business trip to China, Rebecca is sent away to live with a family friend in New Orleans for the next six months. Spending time away from her friends and the gossip in New York doesn't seem too appealing. Especially when she has to spend it with the odd gothic Claudia that plays with Tarot cards for a living. When Rebecca meets the arrogant snobs of Temple Mead Academy, she is instantly on their bad side. Except for the attractive Anton Grey who seems to be interested in her but is sadly unavailable. After wandering into the cemetery one night, Rebecca comes across Lisette, a ghost only she can see. And it seems Lisette has been waiting over a hundred years to get the revenge she longs for.

Ruined is perfectly paced and has a constantly intriguing storyline. I wasn't attached to any of the characters and they lack personality. I was going back and forth "I hate this book!" "I love this book!" It repeated Rebecca's thoughts too much when all I wanted was to dive deeper. It's amazing how author Paula Morris kept the story going with so few settings. This book is packed with a lot of interesting historic info without being overly descriptive. It introduced me to the New Orleans I never knew. It had a huge twist I didn't see coming that made me gasp out loud. I wasn't fully satisfied with the ending because the "feel" didn't fit the rest of the story. You'd have to be very patient to read this book but over all I think it's worth the read.

    Contains:
    *satanic arts
    *brief gruesome description

Ruined: a ghost story- SUCH A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ruined is a must read book if you like suspense, the supernatural, and legend. Ruined is a about a girl named Reabecca Brown( or so she thought) and she goes to New Orleans, Louisana because her father has to go to China on a six month ( supposed) business trip. She is sent to live with her "Aunt Claudia" and " Cousin Aurelia". She becomes best friends with a girl named Lissette. This whole book has to do with Lissettes secret past. I think there really should be a sequel to this book and a movie too. READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw this on a book club website and picked it up... I am glad I did!!

I knew nothing really of the book or the author when I picked this one up. It was a very easy read but kept me interested. I am from New Orleans and I appreciated the way everything was portrayed. Most books set in New Olreans make everyone Cajun or a Voodoo Priestess. There were some unexpected twists and every chapter kept me wanting more. I definitly recommend this to anyone not just locals. It has everything, Power, Money, Control, Supernatural, Suspense, and Comedy. A+

    new Orleans and Ghost Story

This book made me want to see New Orleans intensely soon.
The description of Garden District made me google the place sooner than you can day "Mardi Gras here I come".

Rebecca Brown's character was likable. She's not the typical 16 year old character that's so desperately wanting to fit in her new surroundings or else she'd probably die of an untimely social death. Its a refreshing changing of the typical high schooler climbing the social ladder or the Queen Bee harassing a poor insecure new girl. Anyway I love the story. The mystery started in 1853 at the time of the yellow fever. Morris has also thrown in a little bit of New Orleans history and how the Mardi Gras works and made a beautiful story out of it.

The mystery surrounding Lafayette Cementery, the patrician ways of the Bowman, Suttons and Grey will pique anyones curiosity, the ghost of Lisette, and the suspicious involvement of Rebecca and the gap in her family history are the main points of why I finished the book in a day and a half. Morris' writing still made me want to know what's going to happen chapter after chapter. My $16.99 well spent.
