Overview

With his dominating presence and characteristically gruff voice, Ja Rule has become a ubiquitous and commanding talent, ripping guest shots on Jay-Z's "Can I Get A..." "Gangster Shit" from DJ Clue?'s The Professional, and "Murdergram" from the Streets Is Watching soundtrack. Now the Hollis, Queens, rapper who brought us the rowdy club anthem "Holla, Holla" follows up his platinum-selling debut, Venni, Vetti Vecci, with Rule 3:36, his latest combination of rugged, explosive beats and well-timed, angst-riddled rhymes. The infectious first single, "Between Me and You," is a melodic, pulsating tribute to the dating game featuring singer Christina Milian. Other upbeat tracks include "Extasy," a jazzy tune featuring Tah Murdah, Black Child, and Jayo Felony; the rolling, flute-accented "I Cry" featuring Lil' Mo; and the laid-back, Caribbean-influenced "It's Your Life," featuring Shade Shiest. Edgier cuts such as "6 Feet Underground" and "Love Me, Hate Me" showcase Ja's booming voice and raw delivery. With the high-energy, jeep-ready Rule 3:36, Ja upholds his reputation as one of hip-hop's most animated MCs. Abby Addis

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jason Birchmeier
On his second album, Rule 3:36, Ja Rule includes a few radio-friendly rap-R&B hybrids ("Between You and Me," "Put It on Me," "I Cry"), which are then filled out with the same style of Ruff Ryder-style hardcore rap that characterized his debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci (1999). Whereas that album had featured some prominent guests from the Def Jam stable (Jay-Z, DMX, Erick Sermon, Memphis Bleek), Rule 3:36 is primarily an in-house affair, featuring the extended Murder Inc. roster. The result is an uneven album comprised of crossover-R&B singles and hardcore rap filler; even though the commercial prospects are improved, Rule 3:36 isn't any more satisfying than Venni Vetti Vecci had been.
Entertainment Weekly - Josh Tyrangiel
Where his debut was a barking homage to mentor DMX, this solid follow-up is a soft-focus close-up of Ja's sensitive side.

Ever since I was a young lad growing up in Westchester, I have always been a fan of music. From the greats classics of Copeland to the modern hits of Linda Ronstdat, I have considered myself in tune with the musical community. But I recently ordered this ''ja rule'' character by accident ( I was actually searching for Jar Ule, the great classical violinist of the early 1920s) and I popped this into my CD player. And I was astounded by the terrible cacophany that was expelled from my speakers. This is terrible music.

JA RU IS THE UPCOMMING RAPPER THAT IS EXPLODING. I REALLY LIKE THE TRACK ''BETWEEN ME AND YOU'', IT HAS MELODY AND ITS' NOT ALL STRAIGHT RAP.

A full letter grade up from a hot debut, this sophomore effort well no doubt go down in history as one of passionate lyrical flow, infectious beats and just pure tight hip hop. This CD makes Ja Rule the 4th best MC alive today behind Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem.

Ja rule is one of the rappers that explains life as it is. I think that he relates to 2Pac in someway when it comes to talking about life. He usually never tends to exagerate in his song, like Eminem. I am not saying that Eminem is a bad rapper but his lyrics are very untrue at times. Ja rule is the kind of rapper my mom even likes, his song ''put it on me'' express his feelings and emotins very clearly. I think that he has a good chance of becoming a great rapper like 2pac and Notorious BIG. I have always liked the song ''between me and you'' ever since it came on, its always playing in my car. I can never be tired of that song but people around me are tired of hearing Ja rules songs every time they come around me. I could care less what people think, I truly enjoy his music and will continue to listen to it.

JA RULE is by far one of the best rap atrist today. In Rule 3:36 JA RULE puts a whole differnt meaning to the word ''RAP''. He is a very marvellous singer and gives his songs a great tune as well as wonderful lyrics. JAH can take rap to a higher level.

I loved Ja Rule's sophmore album because his lyrics and his style are totally unique. He doesn't have too many samples. He addresses real issues that happen in everyone's life. The album isn't crowded with too many interludes it's just real good music. If you have listened to his debut album you can tell he has grown: mentally, physically, emotionally, and lyrically. You have to listen to all the songs carefully and you'll understand that ''Pain Is Love'' like Ja Rule says.

Ja second album is better than the first. Almost every song is a banger. Numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 13 are ear-gasmic! I have not heard a n album where every song is hot, but Ja is close with this one.

The voice is recognizable, gruff and demanding. Thats what made ''Holla, Holla'' from the VENNI VETTI VECCI album such a hit! ''Rule 3:36'' delivers even more hits that have propeleld Ja Rule into the status of being of a hip-hop superstar.''Between Me and You'' and ''Put It On Me'', the first 2 singles from ''Rule 3:36'' have become staples in the club scene. All of the other tracks are laced with similar production of upbeat danceability. The record includes diverse tracks ranging from the bumping ''Extasy'' to the adrenaline filled ''Its Your Life'' and the soulfullness of ''I Cry''. Overall if you feel pary music sprinkled with street elements then you need to scoop this one.
