Overview

There’s a fine line between animal instinct and human desire—and in her “highly erotic saga” (Fresh Fiction), #1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh crosses it.

Now, in her new novel of the Breeds, the mating heat continues…

Lion Breed and enforcer Rule Breaker has just a few rules he doesn’t break. Not for anything. Not for anyone—like never have sex with a woman outside his own breed, especially a human woman. Especially someone too helpless, too fun loving and too full of life to ever be able to protect herself, let alone help him to protect her.

If the damned animal inside him insists on a mate, then why pick her? A woman who is an easy target and who can be used as a weapon against him at any time.

But what he suspects is mating heat may not be that at all. Just his animal instincts rioting, pacing, irritated whenever he's away from her.

Okay, he can handle that.

What ensues is a fiery affair that breaks all the rules of mating heat and will eventually endanger his mate with the very rules designed to protect the Breeds—for she’s possibly been working against them…

Sometimes, it just didn’t pay a man or a Breed to make a decision, Rule decided as he lounged against the bar at yet another honky-tonk on the list of known clubs Gypsy often found herself at.

Knowing he’d finally caught up with her hadn’t helped his mood, or his irritation. She’d eluded him for a week and he was growing tired of waiting for her to get her ass back to town.

Rule was beginning to think he was going to have to actually chase her down if he was ever going to see her again.

A week between sightings was too damned long a wait, especially once he’d made up his mind to have her.

After going without the sight of her the past week, he was as antsy as an addict needing a fix and wondering if he should worry about that reaction.

And that just pissed him off.

Maybe he just had an addictive personality, he thought as he watched her and several of her friends stroll purposely onto the dance floor.

She was preparing to dance, and God bless her heart but she could turn grown men into slavering animals hungry to fuck whenever she danced. The smell of their lust never failed to cause him to glower at any male

unlucky enough to catch his gaze.

Maybe he was just too damned used to finding her whenever he wanted to.  Hell, he’d watched her practically grow up. He couldn’t count the times he’d slipped to Window Rock in the past nine years to check on the broken, traumatized child who had fought so

valiantly against those Coyotes so long ago.

And he had to say, she’d grown into a hell of a woman.

She was wary and secretive, and the effects of the night her brother died were often apparent in her too-serious gaze.

But she’d turned into a hell of a beauty.

And he was a sucker for a woman in black leather too.

Miss Gypsy Rum McQuade had adopted a penchant for black leather just after her eighteenth birthday. And she’d been driving him crazy just as long too.

Watching the dainty form, leather boots over her knees, short black leather skirt clinging to her hips and luscious ass, a black leather vest that flashed her bronzed belly and the upper curves of her full breasts, he couldn’t help but grin.

He might have been drooling a little, and damn he hoped Dane Vanderale hadn’t caught him.

But hell, that woman was built to tempt, seduce and deliver, all in one package. Rule decided he was the Breed to collect on it too.

He was damned sure tired of all that lush, pretty body going unclaimed by him.

Jaw clenching, his cock throbbing, he watched as she moved. Lifting her arms and moving her hips, her legs shifting gracefully in four-inch heels, her expression becoming exotic, erotic. Sexy enough to make a Breed have to force himself not to pant.

Long, long straight hair, so dark it was almost black and framing a dusky face so delicate he couldn’t stop the hard-on straining the black mission pants he wore. Graceful and witchy, sensual and burning with a hidden fire, she made him want to burn with her, burn in her.

Fluid and graceful, hips and shoulders swaying, jade green eyes gleamed teasingly, long thick lashes at half-mast. Those eyes glittered with wicked promise—and cool distance.

A distance she’d used against him more than once in the past two months since Jonas had brought his investigation to Window Rock.

Tonight, she was just flat avoiding him, and her explanation for her disappearance was causing more than a few raised brows since she’d arrived less than an hour ago.

According to her, she had been at a spa in Broken Butte, New Mexico. The local sheriff who had mated Jonas’s sister, and a deputy, the sheriff ’s cousin who had mated another Breed, had checked into the story and reported back to Rule, mere minutes ago, that Gypsy had never been to that spa in Broken Butte. They knew, because it was no more than a front for the Bureau of Breed Affairs and every customer that came through its doors was completely vetted.

But who said she came in as a customer?

Rule refrained from shaking his head in frustrated disgust.

Gypsy was going to have to be more careful if she intended to keep doing these little odd jobs for one of her bosses, Cullen Maverick. She was going to end up getting her ass burned at this rate. And if her ass got blistered, then his would be fried.

That thought and any other fled his brain, though, as her eyes met his and locked for heated seconds, and he swore the hunger that raged inside her began to burn him hotter.

Amid a floor filled with seductive, graceful women, sexual invitation gleaming in their eyes—eyes without the distance, without the reserve that shimmered in the very air around her, she stood apart with inexplicable awareness.

She gave herself to the music and that was all she was giving herself to, her gaze seemed to warn.

She didn’t give herself to the men who attempted to draw her to them.

She didn’t give herself to the women who would have rubbed against her in sensual abandon. Nor did she give herself to the drunkenness or the drugs that flowed so freely.

She might be as secretive as hell, but purity flowed from her, even as he felt the dark, rich desire trapped within her—like a living flame.

She burned inside.

Rule swore he could see the flame burning there in the center of her eyes. Not the same flame easily glimpsed in a Breed’s or animal’s eyes in a certain light. This was a flame barely contained, burning from the center of the soul, trapped, aching to be released.

A woman aching to be touched.

    Difficult to follow

I've read every single breed book out there, yet this book was confusing and hard to follow. Too many names and organizations. Maybe if Leigh didn't take so long between books, it would be easier to follow. Maybe not. The breed series has changed too much and not for the better. Lost and bewildered and completely disappointed in Rule Breaker.

Can't get enough of the breed

I enjoyed the book but have to agreed I got confused by all the different people and organiations to much time between books and I have read all of them at least three times each but hard to remember when at least a year or better between books. I feel MsLeigh doesn't appreicate her breed followers what a shame

I had forgotten how convoluted and confusing Leigh's storylines

I had forgotten how convoluted and confusing Leigh's storylines could be. Multiple names for the same people, random side comments that don't go anywhere, and a trend towards all the heroes and heroines being too much a like made this a disappointing read for me. I have read all the Breed books and used to eagerly anticipate each new release. Now, they just kind of ramble on and on. The heroines aren't even that unique anymore. And seriously, do you really think every woman wants "back door" sex? I don't think so. Hoping that the next book will be better. If not, I'm probably done with this series until she writes Cassie's story.

The wonderful Lora Leigh has another hit Breed book on her hands.  I absolutely loved reading Rule Breaker's book.  I have been waiting for it since Lawe's book came out.  Rule is one of these Breeds that you love yet want to strangle at the same time.  This book had me hooked from the beginning all the way to the end. This book had ups and downs in an emotional roller coaster.  I couldn't stop reading this book.  When I found out that I got to review it I let out a fan girl squeal.  Reading about Gypsy in the beginning of the book broke my heart.  I wanted to smack the crap out of Gypsy's mom in the book.   I had to laugh when Rule kept checking for the mating hormones in his mouth.  I am not going to release any spoilers, but you have got to read this book!

4.75 stars:  RULE BREAKER is the twenty-ninth instalment in Lora

4.75 stars:  RULE BREAKER is the twenty-ninth instalment in Lora Leigh’s paranormal Breed series focusing on a government experiment that went horribly wrong. Trying to create the ultimate warrior, the scientists combined animal DNA with human embryos resulting in a species that has been feared and tortured since their inception. Hoping to prevent their exposure, the Breeds are hunted, tortured and destroyed by the very people who created them.  This is Rule Breaker and Gypsy McQuade’s story.
The call to mate is strong but every once in awhile there are those who refuse to acknowledge the existence of the ONE. Rule knows that Gypsy McQuade is his mate but refuses to stake a claim fearing that he should risk her life and her heart.  What ensues is a storyline of one man who cannot stay away from the call of his mate but a storyline where his mate is the number one suspect in an act of betrayal against the Breeds.
With the release of RULE BREAKER Lora Leigh has addressed and answered many of the previous unknowns, quandaries and unfinished storylines.  The buildup of a betrayer and the fight to save a young child’s life will come full circle as the reader is pulled into a struggle between family and friends.  We are witness to a woman who knows rejection and betrayal at the hands of those that she loves but the pain only intensifies when the truth about her brother’s death and her family’s connections slowly destroy a heart that was broken so many years before.
Once again, Lora gathers many of the previous storyline characters as questions are answered and mysteries are solved.  We watch as a father fears for the life of child and mate while another family begins to break apart when the truth is finally revealed.
RULE BREAKER is a must read for fans of Lora Leigh’s Breed series as a number of unfinished scenarios are addressed and the healing process can begin.  Lora’s signature style of erotic sex and mating heat is tempered by a slow build up of the relationship between our leading couple. There is a heartbreaking period where you will feel the pain and humiliation for a woman who only wants to be loved but in the end it is the fear of loss and the unknown that will force a Breed male to reject the woman that he loves-even Breed men need a lesson in how to treat their mates!

    Extremely disappointing

I have read every breed book. Rule's story had too many characters, convoluted plotting, boring repetition. Very disappointing.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Kelly  NUMBER OF HEARTS: 2 1/2 REVIEW:  WOW!

    REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Kelly
    NUMBER OF HEARTS: 2 1/2
    REVIEW:
WOW!!!!! 29 books in this series so far? And I think I read on Ms. Feehan that this series is going to be drawing to a close, but I would have to double check that. But I think that it might be time. While this was an okay book it really didn’t feel like the story went any where. And this was a long book around 450 pages. And it seems like a lot of those pages were just filled with random words. I honestly never felt a connection to Gypsy & Rule. I tried really hard to like them as a couple but it just didn’t work for me. I am not really sure of the why’s about this. Maybe it is just Gypsy’s personality. Maybe it is how Rule tries to denies what she means to him. Maybe it was a lot of things. Maybe it is because it has been so long since I read this series? And there is not enough time in the day to do a 28 book re-read.
Needless to say I am on the fence as to whether I will read the need book(s) in this series. I liked Gideon and would like to know more about him. But on the same hand I don’t want to be let down with a just okay story for him.

    Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley & PENGUIN GROUP Berkley, NAL / Signet Romance, DAW in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

    She did it again!

Another awesome installment of one of my favorite series! Old friends, compelling storylines that are carried throughout the series in well thought out and engaging ongoing storylines (no small trick if you consider the number of titles in the series), all while keeping it hot! Damn....Lora's good! Thanks for never letting me down and always leaving me wanting more....like right now another would be great! Lol

    Really Good!

After reading the reviews on this book I was very nervous to read it. However I was very happy to find out that this book stayed true to the series. It concludes a lot of story lines while expanding on others. This book explained a little who everyone was but I can see if someone just picked it up they would have a hard time figuring out what was going on. Overall I really enjoyed this book however if I were to suggest it I would make sure that the previous books were read first. So good!

I loved these books, but I'm highly disappointed with how long it takes for a new one to be released. And even more, the wait for Cassie's book is way past anticipation and on it's way to frustration. I fear that if her story isn't one of the next two books, then just like Christine Feehan's 'Dark' series, I will give up on the series. I'm a lover of long series, I still read the Anita Blake series, but if I have to wait so long between books I tend to lose interest.

LL....please consider $7.99 or less. When writing a series remember how much your readers have invested to get that far and give us a break please!

Paid 13 bucks and couldn't make ot out of the prologue

I have read every one of the breed series going back to when they were on eloras cave. Most of them I enjoyed. Some more than others but this was a mess. Random streams of writing that went nowhere. This was not a story. It was pieces and parts thrown together. There is a growing number of bestselling authots out there suddenly putting out shoddy stories. I used to wonder what was causing this. Now I'm just sick and tited of getting ripped off.

OMG!!! This is so awesome!! Gypsy and Rule Breakers story of loss, heartbreak, deceit, suspense, justice and love. I couldn't put the book down there was constantly something happening. Lora definitely outdid herself with this book, the long wait for another Breed book was most definitely worth the wait. I can't wait for the next book. Outstanding reading.
