Book Two of Megan McDonald’s Sisters Club series! "Here’s hoping for a third act."—KIRKUS REVIEWS

Alex has always been the Actor with-a-capital-A in the Reel family, and middle-sister Stevie has always been content behind the scenes. But when the school play turns out to be a musical, Stevie decides that she’s tired of being the Sensible One. Maybe, for once, she’d like to be in the spotlight! Soon the dueling divas—with little sister Joey egging them on—are in a fierce competition to see who has what it takes to play the Princess. Has Stevie broken the rules by going for what she wants, or will it be Alex who hands down the biggest betrayal of all?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Candice Ransom
The sequel to McDonald's The Sister's Club (Pleasant Company, 2003) brings back thirteen-year-old Alex, eleven-year-old Stevie, and nine-year-old Joey. The club threatens to disband when Stevie decides to break out of her middle-sister niche and try out for the singing lead in the school production of Once Upon a Mattress. Acting is older sister Alex's territory and fireworks sizzle as the girls become fierce competitors. Instigator Joey eggs on both sisters to keep the stakes raised and interest level ratcheted high. Stevie tells the story in narrative chapters that are interspersed with play scripts written by Alex, who does not want to share the spotlight, along with amusing journal entries, lists, and drawings by Joey. Whether or not they have siblings, readers will root for all three characters in this funny mid-grade novel. If good things happen in threes, readers will look forward to more titles in "The Sisters Club" series. Reviewer: Candice Ransom

Gr 4–6—In this follow-up to The Sisters Club (Pleasant Co., 2003), the two oldest Reel girls, Alex, 13, the actor in the family, and Stevie, 11, the singer, clash when they both try out for the lead role in a school production of Once Upon a Mattress. As in the earlier title, Stevie is the main narrator, in standard chapters; Alex's sections are in the form of scripts, complete with stage directions; nine-year-old Joey keeps a journal and makes lists, which she illustrates with doodles. The story is believable, as are the sisters' interactions. The different styles add to the fun and help move the plot along quickly. Fans of Meg Cabot's Allie Finkle and graduates of Judy Moody will enjoy this offering.—Laura Stanfield, Campbell County Public Library, Ft. Thomas, KY
Kirkus Reviews
The Reel sisters-Joey, Stevie and Alex-are back in the second installment of the Sisters Club series. Each sister has her role in the family, and Stevie is the one who likes to do the backstage work. Even thinking about being onstage makes Stevie nervous-it's older sister Alex who's the star. When tryouts for Once Upon a Mattress roll around and Alex is uninterested, Stevie, who loves to sing, decides to try out. Turns out, Alex can't resist the lure of the stage, even when a light comedy is on the bill. Woven into the sisterly drama of jealousy and minor betrayal is Little Women, which Stevie is reading aloud to Joey (who wants to be called Jo). References to the classic abound, and readers familiar with it will be relieved when the sisters, after drama of all sorts, sort themselves into a supportive, March-like relationship. McDonald manages to squeeze a lot of action into one story, but instead of feeling frantic, it feels like a real family. Here's hoping for a third act. (Fiction. 8-12)

Ready, set, go. Red, white, blue. It's the Rule of Three. The book Rule of Three is an outstanding book. It is by Megan McDonald, a remarkable author. Alex is the actor in the Reel family of Oregon, but Joey is the funniest. But when the school play turns out to be a musical, Stevie, the singer in the family, decided she would like to try out for the lead. Alex isn't so keen on competing for the same role as her younger sister, and soon they are participating in a fierce competition to find out who's got what it takes to play the Princess Winnifred. Who will win the sister's battle? This connects to a book I read by the same author called The Sisters Club. The book is about an awesome club. Alex, Stevie, and Joey made it and they have so much fun together. They talk about gossip and boys. Here is some information about the wonderful Megan McDonald!! Mrs. McDonald has written and published over 60 books for children in 22 languages, including the hilarious Judy Moody adventures, which are largely inspired by her childhood memories of growing up with four older sisters. She was born in February, 1959, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Megan McDonald began her career as a children's librarian. She has received five awards for her books!! Mrs. McDonald is married and lives in Sebastopol, California. I recommend this book to girls and ONLY girls!!! If you like gossip, acting, drama, and battles between the three Reel sisters, then this is the book for you!! Thank You!!!

Hi girls, I love the book, I have gotta say that my charecter has GOT TO be Alex, because I heart acting!! Acting is my specialty, I'm so happy that Megan has put acting into her book, I'm not in middle school yet, but I'm doing acting classes, and in middle school I plan on going into the acting stage, because when I'm older, I think that I will be better at acting than right now. And in my last acting class, I didn't have to move around in the play until I was done memorizing thr script/ all I really had to do was memorize a VERY short script. GOSH!!!!!
