This was listed as Amy Tan's latest book. It is only 36 pages long and is not the quality I have come to expect from Ms. Tan. It is so far, essentially a monologue giving instructions to a virgin courtesan about how to lose her virginity at the most appropriate time and under the best circumstances to achieve the most gain.
I was extremely disappointed!!!

I was expecting a full length book, not a short story. Very disappointing selection by a favorite (or was) author. If I had known how short this was I would not have wasted my money.

I haven't read the book but I think BN should start putting the number of pages like they do with their non-ereader books. I think it will eliminate a lot of the disappointment when a full novel is expected and a short story is produced.

This book left me hanging!!! 36 pages and the last line is "I'll be there to return your common sense." What am I missing? I need the rest of the story! Where is the rest of the story?

Just as I thought I could get into this book it was over. I got it as an ebook and was not aware it wasn't worth it. It should be called a short story by Amy Tan. Don't waste your money.

Can't believe I wasted time and money reading this. It was first advertised as a new BOOK by the author; I now see they have revised the description as a short story, probably after so many reader review complaints of having wasted money on only 36 pages. I am personally grateful that this terrible thing did not go on any longer because I could not possibly stand to read any more of the endless, boring rambling. This was the worst thing I have ever read!

Overview
In her startlingly sensual new story, Rules for Virgins—this 45-page jewel of a tale is the first fiction she has published in six years—beloved bestselling author Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club, The Bonesetter’s Daughter) takes us deep into the illicit world of 1912 Shanghai, where beautiful courtesans mercilessly compete for the patronage of wealthy gentlemen. For the women, the contest is deadly serious, a perilous game of economic survival that, if played well, can set them up for life as mistresses of the rich and prominent. There is no room for error, however: erotic power is hard to achieve and harder to maintain, especially in the loftiest social ...
