NATURAL ALLIES ...

Esmay Suiza and Brun Meager should be friends— they're both bright, brave, likable and adventurous. But true friendship doesn't run any smoother than true love. Brun thinks Esmay's a stuck-up prig, and Esmay thinks Brun's a spoiled rich brat who's making a play for Barin Serrano, Esmay's first love. So when Brun falls into the hands of a repressive religious militia movement, Esmay finds herself in disgrace, suspected of conniving at the capture. Even Barin, now being pursued by the beautiful and ambitious Casea Ferradi, has turned against her, and Brun's powerful family doesn't want Esmay anywhere near the rescue attempt.

Meanwhile, Brun has to figure out how to survive as a pregnant, barefoot prisoner on a planet where female captives are surgically muted to keep them from contaminating others. Her luck may have run out, but her courage hasn't—she's determined to free not only herself, but also other, younger captives. This burst of initiative imperils her own rescue, and it will take double her own luck to save her.

A universe to get lost in.

Oh, dear. Another series has me hooked, and this one's got - gasp! - seven books in it. What's worse, I've begun reading them out of order since 'Rules of Engagement' is the second of four Esmay Suiza novels which follow (and in a sense continue) the Heris Serrano trilogy. Author Moon has created a believable universe, the kind in which a speculative fiction reader who's particularly fond of strong-but-flawed female protagonists can't help but get immersed. I have two complaints about 'Rules of Engagement.' First, it told me repeatedly how Esmay and Brun compared to each other when I could and did figure that out for myself from their actions and their words. Second, I'm getting tired of the obligatory female war hero who needs remedial instruction in (shades of Nancy Kwan) how to enjoy being a girl. Despite those two peeves, though, I loved this book. It delivered action, a textured background, and a varied cast of characters with each functioning as an individual. I'm looking forward to reading more.

    More, More!!

Esmay and Brun haven't finished here. They excitement of the story and need for a serious love interest means that another book is forthcoming and Elizabeth Moon should not keep us waiting.

    YES IT ROCKS :)

Not as good as the earlier, 'Once a Hero' but still a very good read. ( I couldnt put it down)The ending seems a little forced...but with characters like Esmay and Brun...its hard to go wrong :)
