Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Elements of romance, action, sci-fi, as well as social and media criticism come together in this manga-influenced work, which was originally published in serial form. Raven Tansania Ransom is a teenaged outcast in an upscale, futuristic private school. Having once idolized Crimson August, the handsome star of the action soap opera Rumble Girls, her attentions are now turned to Yuji, a teacher who coaches her in the use of hardskins-giant suits of robotic armor. Matters are complicated by the fact that everyone in Raven's world has a secret, particularly Yuji, who has more than one revelatory surprise in store for her. Even Raven herself has a secret, albeit one that she herself is not even aware of. Then, she is chosen to join the cast of Rumble Girls and agrees to become Silky Warrior Tansie, not realizing the level of ownership that the program's owners (delightfully depicted as empty suits) will have over her. While the ideas are interesting, the book can be bewildering, with the use of a unique slang language created by the author and characters changing identities and genders. The confusion is amplified by the reduction of the original black-and-white comics into a pocket format, which can further clutter the somewhat sketchy artwork. Still, this may be just the ticket for readers looking for a graphic novel with a complex female lead.-Douglas P.
