Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book is one in a series of thirteen and counting easy read books about a dragon who wants to turn the cave he inherited from his grandmother into a fancy hotel. In this story, Rumble takes on the damp and cold by getting Todd Toad to fix the plumbing. The consequences are nearly disastrous for Rumble's pal Shelby Spider but all is well that ends well—or at least well enough to allow for Felicia Law to come up with another riff on Rumble's bumbling into the hotel business. The book is one of Picture Window Books entries into the easy reader market, with an attempt to appeal to both home and school markets. The reading level for these Rumble stories is at the fifth of eight levels, probably late second grade, and the books are part of the popular Accelerated Reading program. The tone is ever so British, which does appeal to some—in fact, the series seems to have first been published in England. Each spread has a full-page illustration done in friendly anthropomorphic cartoon animal style. Nevertheless, each story falls a little flat and the characterization is not strong. It might have been more effective to turn two or three of the series into a single beginning chapter book. This book is part of the "Read-It! Readers" series. 2005, Picture Window Books, Ages 5 to 8.
