Overview

In his follow-up to the best-selling Ultra-Marathon Man, world-renowned ultra marathoner Dean Karnazes chronicles his unbelievable exploits and explorations in gripping detail; Karnazes runs for days on end without rest, across some of the most exotic and inhospitable places on earth, including the Australian Outback, Antarctica, and the back alleys of New Jersey.

From the downright hilarious to the truly profound, the stories in Run! provide readers with the ultimate escape and offer a rare glimpse into the mindset and motivation of an extreme athlete, one who has, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer, “Not only pushed the envelope but blasted it to bits.”

Karnazes addresses pain and perseverance, and he also charts the emotional as he pushes to the edges of human achievement.  The tales of the friendships he’s cultivated on his many adventures around the world warm the heart, and are sure to captivate and inspire readers whether they run great distances, modest distances, or not at all.

The hardcover edition was met with the enthusiastic support of Karnazes’s devoted fan base, and word-of-mouth excitement as well as media coverage from LIVE! with Regis and Kelly brought the book to the attention of scores of new readers. Karnazes’s colorful tales of his extreme running adventures are as entertaining as they are innately human, giving the book potential as a perennial paperback favorite.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

With sales of over 100,000 copies, Dean Karnazes's debut Ultramarathoner was, pardon the term, a runaway bestseller. In this swift selling book, the only endurance runner named as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World shares his favorite stories of heart-pounding adventures. While describing racing under brutally grueling conditions, he addresses not only the pain one endures, but also the mind-set and motivation that make it endurable. At the core of his narrative is a human connection: He writes about his friendship with an inexperienced runner who ultimately exceeded Dean as a competitor. A refreshing interlude for weekend warriors and avid marathoners alike. Now in trade paperback and NOOK Book.

    Quick, easy read

I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway. I have to say that overall this was an interesting read. It's not some great piece of literature, but it held my interest and I found some of he stories quite fascinating.

The book is composed of 26.2 chapters, most of which are stories that for the most part stand alone. Yeah, that's a little gimmicky, but it made for a quick and easy read. I really liked a lot of his experiences with his ultra marathon races. That's what I read the book for, and I was not disappointed. There were other things in there like fan letters he had received, an interview with his kids, and a section written by his wife that really could have been left out of the book. I guess that stuff is for his fans, but putting that on a blog or website would have been more appropriate.

The best part, of course, were the stories about his races. He made them personal. And you can really feel the crazy determination that is needed in the sport of ultra marathons. This is for runners and non-runners alike. You don't have to be part of that craziness to enjoy reading about it.

    Good. Not great.

Still very motivational while reading. Dean still comes off a little frat boyish at time (but not so much as in his previous books). Quick read. Good and fun stories. Finished in a day, but nothing really to chew on.

    Good, but not great.

    More than about running

I love to run, but love to read about running? Thats literally another story. In his honest and almost simple way dean teaches us sure, about life, but the gem is in how running and all that it encompasses (the relationships he builds, his grace in not winning, his generosity and willingness to share his love of various cultures and societies) makes running not merely a sport but a lifestyle! He teaches us how running so passionately teaches you about life and yourself.

Very Inspiring- makes me want to lace up my running shoes and take off

A collection of stories from the author's heart. He's inspired so many to "get up off the couch" and Run! leads the way. His stories of sweat and toil, joy and pain really puts the reader out there among the athletes, be they young or old, large-sized or small.
    Definitely a not-to-miss read.
