Runaway Grandma provides an example of the "escape phantasy

Runaway Grandma provides an example of the "escape phantasy" many of us sometimes conjure up while watching waves at the beach. But, soon the characters become very real and their interactions and concerns are deeply shared by the reader. It is a most enjoyable reading experience.

    Great Story

Grandmother Olivia is tired of being taken for granted, and worried that her son will declare her incompetent to take charge of her assets. Loving her kids, but having no desire to live in a nursing home or otherwise lose her independence and personhood, she takes off for parts un known to find a new life for herself. Settling in a small town in Western Pennsylvania, Olivia finds new friends, and a rich, life full of challenges, and many rewards. For anyone who wondered if Huck and Jim were the only ones allowed on the raft, Olivia shows that it is never too late to light out for the territories. A good read, about a brave woman looking out for herself after a lifetime of looking out for others.

Runaway Grandma was a wonderful read! This book explains the reality of life and how sometimes things don't turn out the way you had expected. Too often we hear stories about how love, loss and greed can morph loved ones into strangers. This story shows how brave Olivia was in her ability to take the hand that life had played her and turn it into something meaningful for herself. No, it is not a funny read as some may have expected but it is indeed an interesting perspective on how quickly your life can change. Well done Ann, well done.

Runaway Grandma by Ann McCauley is a delightful read. If you are widowed and have children who are scheming to change your life, this is a must read. At times, everyone feels like running away. Olivia Hampton was brave enough to form a plan of action that she was able to carry out. Leaving your family behind to start your life all over again is most difficult! There are many interesting turns in this book. With tears and laughter, read and enjoy this book.

Loved the book, as did our book club.

Our heroine may have been older, but she wasn't dead!!!! She had always been independent and felt useful to her family and to her community. She inherited some money which was looking good to her son.....and soon her children began to try to make decisions for her. She ran away but you probably figured that out from the title.... and using some very interesting techniques created a whole new persona..... It could have really happened. This is a good book and makes a good starting place for book discussions to talk about women’s issues....from the aging standpoint.

Not the fun read I expected. So happy to see a story line for my age group only to find life lessons shoved down my throat. Really? Is there a test?

    Runaway Grandma

Olivia feels that her son will try to have her declared incompetent and take control of her assets, so she carefully devises a plan to disappear. She ends up living in a different part of the country where she meets an older gentleman and they become great friends. This book reveals an unusual solution to a family problem. I highly recommend it.

    A reviewer

This is a well written and interesting book about a woman who decides to start anew at 70. Rather than having to fight her adult children, who are selfish and more interested in her fortune than her, Olivia decides to reinvent herself elsewhere. Her journey is filled with memorable characters, laughter and tears.
