The third and final book the NYT bestselling trilogy.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this novel that is subtitled, "An Airhead Novel," the reader should beware that the writing is airheaded. Filled with teen jargon and interior dialogue, readers will be unsure whether the book is a sequel or if the next page will explain the plot. Flashbacks abound, but without chronology, where or when do the scenes occur? Emerson Watts is on the run, but readers will find it difficult to learn why. The rich Brandon Stark is holding her prisoner in the Stark mansion, at least long enough to do a brain transplant. She and Nikki have exchanged bodies, it seems, but neither is happy about it. Nikki demands that Emerson give her back her face! Everyone's goal is to avoid the paparazzi. An old boyfriend attempts to rescue her, but Em will not leave without others who are also being held against their will. It would seem that a kidnapping with threats to kill would cause characters to be serious, but puppy love and thumping hearts take the place of figuring out how to get away. All the characters in turn become TSTL (Too Stupid To Live). Brandon must have made Christopher do something, but the mention of the situation is not enough to make sense. Character dialogue could easily clarify but it is absent. Stark Quarks has something to do with the plot, but with so many characters appearing, disappearing, reappearing, they get lost in the confusion. This novel might appeal to Meg Cabot fans, but this reviewer is totally lost. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
From The Critics
Gr 7 Up—In this final volume in the trilogy, Em Watts is being held captive by Brandon Stark, son of evil billionaire entrepreneur Robert Stark. Thanks to a forced brain transplant, the teen has been living in the body of superstar model Nikki Howard. Em manages to break out of Brandon's place and find her way back to NYC, but of course, it's impossible to hide when you're a world-famous celebrity. With the help of her tech-savvy friend, Felix, she uncovers Robert Stark's top-secret venture, Project Phoenix, and ultimately reveals it to the public. A bit slow-moving in the middle, the story really picks up as all the loose ends are tied up. Several romantic subplots with secondary characters provide humorous moments, as does the strong narrative voice. Despite its sci-fi premise, this is pure Cabot. At its essence are discussions of femininity and the premium that society places on beauty and youth, all wrapped up in a surface-level fluffy read full of brand-name-dropping and glamour.—Jennifer Barnes, formerly at Homewood Library, IL

Meet the Author

Meg Cabot
Meg Cabot
Keeping up with Meg Cabot is tricky: the Princess Diaries author turns out light entertaining novels for teens and adults at a furious pace. Which is good news for her fans, who snap them up as fast as she can write them!

Biography

Meg Cabot knows that one of the best cures for feeling gawky and conspicuous is reading about someone who sticks out even more than you do. Her books for young adults invariably feature girls who have extraordinary powers that carry extraordinary burdens. Cabot's Princess Diaries series offers up the secret thoughts of Mia Thermopolis, who discovers at age 14 that she is actually the princess of a small European country. This revelation adds significantly to her extant concerns about crushes, friendships, school, and other matters falling under adolescent scrutiny.

Cabot, a native of Indiana weaned on Judy Blume and Barbara Cartland, was already a successful romance novelist (as Patricia Cabot) before she began writing for young adults; her alter-alter ego, Jenny Carroll, began a new series shortly after The Princess Diaries debuted. The Carroll books are divided between the Mediator series, starring a girl who can communicate with restless ghosts; and the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU books, in which a girl struck by lightning acquires the ability to locate missing people.

Cabot writes her books in a conspiratorial, first-person style that resonates with her readers. She has obviously kept a grip on the vernacular and the key issues of adolescence; but what makes her books so irresistible is the mixing of the mundane with the fantastic. After all, who wouldn't like to wake up and be a princess all of a sudden, or a seer? Cabot takes such offhand notions and roots them firmly in the details of average, middle-class American life. She has also tiptoed into mystery and paranormal suspense with other YA novels and series installments.

Cabot continues to write adult novels under various permutations of her given name (Meggin Patricia Cabot): from 19th-century historical romances to contemporary chick lit. And, as with her books for teens, these romances have earned praise for their lighthearted humor and well drawn characters.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Cabot:

"I am left handed."

"I hate tomatoes of any kind."

"I really wanted to be veterinarian, but I got a 410 on my math SATs."

"Writing used to be my hobby, but now that it's my job, I have no hobby -- except watching TV and laying around the pool reading US Weekly. I have tried many hobbies, such as knitting, Pilates, ballet, yoga, and guitar, but none of them have taken. So I guess I'm stuck with no hobby.

A good read for those seeking mindless entertainment

I would recommend this book if you have already invested time in the previous two books in the series. Runaway ties up many of the loose ends in the series, but I found that it did so in an unrealistic and disappointingly non-action-packed manner. There was too much insight into the main character's thoughts (which were horribly repetitive) and not enough excitement. If you are one of those people, like myself, however, who continue reading a mediocre series solely to learn how it ends, then I advise you to read this book. It was a decent read for entertainment purposes in that it went quickly and I didn't have to invest much thought into the story.

'Runaway' is a great end to this edgy trilogy!

As Meg Cabot's newest release "Runaway," opens, we see that Em Watts is hiding, from the paparazzi, from her family, from her friends, and even from her own life. Forced into an unhappy partnership with her non-boyfriend (who just happens to be the power hungry son of her evil employer), Em is at her breaking point. Now she's just waiting her time out, but the waiting is taking to look. She is, in fact, waiting for the live Stark Angel fashion show and for the real Nikki to stand up and reveal what she found out about Stark Enterprises, as well as what led to this whole predicament. Her dilemma is that she is stuck between the desire to protect those she cares about and the determination to expose Stark's wrongdoings. Em will have to decide if she can take a stand, or if she's better off running away from it all.

"Runaway," third in the Airhead series, was preceded by "Airhead" and "Being Nikki" and closes this trilogy off nicely. The storyline was fascinating and Cabot still managed to surprise her readers with tidbits. I don't like to reveal anything substantial about the book, its progression, or its ending, but this one does end happily ever after. Em's character goes through quite a bit and with this last book of the trilogy, readers will applaud her ability to hang in there. Also, a big driver of this book was the background discussion about business ethics, identity theft, and even reclaiming a new identity. It's the gift that Christopher gives to Em at the end that is so thoughtful and touching, and it reminds readers that we are who we are, not matter what crosses our path in life.

    Wonderful =D

I loved this book. cant believe it was the last one but im glad Cabot ended it so well tying it all up very nicely. The question we have all been wondering about, what is Stark hiding finally gets answered. The answer will scare you especially if your young, pretty, healthy and a traveler, not saying anymore than that i hate spoilers..lol but i have a feeling if your a facebook addict you wont be after you read this =P One thing i enjoyed a lot when reading this book is the relationship between Em and Christopher its so easy to relate to it, this book makes you feel like your in Em shoes and i love the ending how everyone basically lives happily ever after except Robert Stark :). If you haven't read this book you should it's a must read. Hope you enjoy it =D

Another Fantastic Series from Meg Cabot

I, like other readers, was dubious to begin this series because it is about a model. However, it only took the first few sentences of Airhead for me to realize that this series is not about a model at all! It is about Em Watts, a lovable, dorky girl who is forced into a situation and life she wants no part of. My favorite dynamic of this series is Em's relationship with "supervillian" Christopher, who sets out to avenge Em's death though she is really still alive.
I also enjoyed the fact that Em isn't perfect. She has "trust issues" and feels like she has to handle everything on her own, and she doesn't realize this until Christopher calls her out in Runaway.
Overall, Airhead is a fantastic, interesting series that combines science-fiction with romance in an unpredictable, fun way. I would certainly reccomend this series to anyone who wants more than the shallow plots which many teen books only offer.
