Children's Literature - Children's Literature
I found this book confusing. I can't tell who's telling the story. Is it being told from the perspective of the DeSaussure twins or the author, or both? The narrative also switches from first person to third person. Nevertheless, it is a story of the Police Athletic League (PAL) and how it helped two African American girls, Mary and Martha DeSaussure, how they influenced other minority children, and how the PAL continues to work with young girls and boys even today. It is a story of two determined twins who made their parents proud of them. It is a story of an old fashion Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood where African Americans, Italians, Irish and Jews lived together in harmony, helping each other, and watching out for each other's children. It is a story of a truly Christian family who loved each other and served the Lord. A wonderful story in spite of the confusing format and poor pictures. 2000, Royal Fireworks Press, Ages 8 to 12, $9.99. Reviewer: Leila Toledo

My name is Cynthia Donaldson, I am now 45 years old and a retired NYC Police Officer and MSW Masters Degree in Social Worker. I am now working on Gods side as an Online Missionary with GMO. I am a mother of two beautiful grown children and one Grandchild and my youngest is attending Washington University in St. Louis. This did not seem possible due to my harsh environmental influences until back in 1977. This is when God sent me this wonderful Angel name Mary Sober who walked into my life and ask me to run Track and field. My mother agreed and the impact was a success story today.Thank you Mary Sobers for breaking ground for me as a young teenager in track and field which I did until 30years old. I want to say thank you Mary Sobers you had patience and stamina to teach me that life is a contest and everyday we are to prepare to win this race of life with the help of God Philippians 4:13. Thank you so much and God Bless you and family. Your NYC Hall of Fame Honor and this book is a well deserved Honor.
