Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bruce Adelson
In the second book of this series, the Monday Night Football Club's three members again find one of their number magically transported into the body of his favorite football player in the midst of a Monday Night Football game. This time, it is Elliott Rifkin's turn to don the old, itchy, wool sweater belonging to fellow clubber Nick Lighter's grandfather, and find himself on the NFL gridiron. The magic works again, transposing Elliott with Detroit Lions' running back Barry Sanders. Elliott plays for the Lions while Sanders watches "himself" running with the football on television while surrounded by three adolescents. The author presents a highly readable story, filled with excitement and anticipation of Elliott's big moment. Notably, unlike the first book, here the transposed football player does not win the game for his team. Indeed, Elliott qua Barry Sanders has a critical concentration lapse that impacts on his team's fortunes. Although the book's commercialism, its numerous references to ABC's Monday Night Football, can be discomfiting, this is still a good title for the young football fan in your house. He or she will likely be interested in its story and will relate to the interaction among the three club members, including Neil's less than warm relationship with his older sister.
