Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth McMunn-Tetangco
Part of the "Tell Me About Sports" series, this book is full of information, and written with an eye towards its young audience. Straightforward and engaging, this is a good primer for young athletes and interested youth alike. With short, simple sections on track running, hurdling, long-distance running, and star runners, among other topics, the book is engaging, to-the-point, and full of tips and photos. Special sections cover training and running tactics. The book's length reflects the reading ability and attention span of its intended audience—all of its sections are placed on two-page spreads with illustrations, charts, and simply written paragraphs. This selection would be at home in a school library, or even in the private collection of a burgeoning runner. Older, or more established runners, however, will eventually need more information than this book can provide, given its simplicity and its focus on its target demographic, but there is certainly a place for introductions, and this is a nice one. Gr 3–5—Each book gives a typical overview of the rules of the game before concentrating on the specific skills needed to succeed, such as catching and batting a baseball or relay-racing and hurdling. Superstars in each field are mentioned in a few sentences. Colorful photographs of boys and girls enjoying the sport enhance the text. The books are similar in scope to the "In the Zone" series (Weigl) but not as detailed in step-by-step execution as the "Skills in Motion" series (Rosen). Update an older collection by selecting from the various sports offered.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
