“She passed a hard candy over her shoulder as though whatever was in the tiny wrapper was supposed to make it all better. I clutched the peppermint in my hand and buried my face in the hard leather seat while she explained what was going to happen to me. She promised that I’d be safe from then on.”

And so begins the journey of Naomi, whose amazing story picks up where the past and future intersect. As Naomi struggles to hide the ugly physical and emotional reminders that insist on haunting her dreams, she crosses paths with a young boy, Xavier and his bad-tempered mother, Mona, who share an interesting story much like her own.

Running from Solace is an emotional tale which will send you catapulting on a breathless journey beyond breaking points and will lead you to believe in the power of accepting what is to be.

    This is a MUST read!

This book grabbed me by the collar from page one and never let go, even at the end! You will never forget the characters nor be able to stop thinking about the story for a long while to come. This isn't a story you can meander your way through, you are invested and engaged with the characters and their behaviors and actions. You'll be pierced to your heart in so many ways and yet there is triumph in the end. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Well worth the price, beautifully, conversationally written, and the talent of this author is amazing. How she is able to "be" so many of the characters and let you see inside their minds is just mesmerizing and pure genius.

    Phenomenal!!!

Running from Solace was a phenomenal read! Nakia Laushaul craftfully weaved together a story that readers will remember for a very long time. Her characters are sure to prick your heart, make sad, mad and laugh all throughout the book. I can't wait for her next book. This author is sure to be around for a long time if she continues to write stories as descriptive and believable at this one. Great job!

    Captivating

I read this entire book cover to cover last night! It is a great story that hooked me right off the bat. I will definitely keep an eye out for more titles from this author.

The only reason I didn't give five stars was due to some awkward vernacular and some passages felt clunky. However it really didn't take away much from such a well crafted story and characters :)

    Everybody Hurts

"Running from Solace" tells the story of Naomi, a woman who has dealt with mental, emotional, and physical abuse by her close relatives at an early age. Having survived time through the foster care system, Naomi is now married and working for Child Protective Services. When she is assigned to investigate a new case of child abuse allegations, she is forced to face the skeletons that are lingering in her closet. What makes Naomi feel so connected to this case? Will Naomi be able to face her demons? .Or will Naomi continue RUNNING FROM SOLACE?

Nakia Laushaul's style of writing is phenomenal; she grabs the heart of the reader from the first line of the book. I love how this author gave each of the main characters a voice of their own. As I read the pages of this book, I felt as though I was sitting in the room with all of them. I visualized each of the characters standing in the middle of an empty stage giving me an account of their lives, sharing with me their pain, their happiness, and their discoveries. There were times I had to put the book down and have a good cry. This book is not predictable, so if you feel you have it figured out in the beginning...think again!

I would recommend "Running from Solace" to everyone that loves to read. Authors, take note of Nakia Laushaul!!! I haven't felt this strong about a book in a long time.

    One of the best!

I read this in a day and a half and it was one of the most emotional, raw, and real books I have ever read. It deals with so many issues that plague society, yet we want to turn a blind eye to it and act like it doesnt exist or affect peoples lives. This story addresses physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and abandonment that has become a generational curse. It shows how love, real love, and Gods help can assist those who have been damaged move towards restoration. The storys twists and turns leave you on the edge of your seat and the narration with the changing of perspectives make it all the more interesting and gives more insight to the characters and their motives of pain and hurt. In my pinion this is a must read but if you are a victim of abuse, this may be a hard book for you to read.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! IF YOU PICK IT UP...YOU WILL NOT PUT IT DOWN UNTIL YOU ARE DONE!

I received this book as a birthday present...little did I know that once I picked the book up it would be close to impossible for me to put it down!! Running from Solace literally had me on an emotional roller coaster. I caught myself tearing up, putting my hand over my mouth, and in complete shock with the characters. I was so into the book I would go to sleep reading, wake up reading, reading during my lunch hour, reading at the park, and even reading in the hot car. Needless to say this was the best birthday present ever.I am ready for the sequel...and willing to make my purchase in advance!
You will not regret purchasing this book.make sure you have your seatbelt securely fastened because you will be on an emotional roller coaster.

Not for the light of heart

This is an emotionally gripping book.. many plot twists it kept me fully engaged and empathetic with the cast if characters. As a child of abuse it was easy to relate to the confusion and chaos the choices of adults can bring to you for a life time of hurt.

Nakia R. Laushaul put a spell on me...

That's the only thought process I have to explain how I opened Running from Solace and literally (not figuratively) did not put it down until I hit the back cover. A good writer can make you flinch at a painful description. A phenomenal writer can actually make reach for a bruise as if you have been wounded yourself.

From tragedy to triumph, Running from Solace is a rare gem that will have you torn between closing your eyes to the madness and sneaking a peek at the next page to ease the suspense.

Brava, Ms. Laushaul! My heart survived your debut novel, and I have been thoroughly bewitched into buying anything else you release.

    Running from Solace

A very superbly written and cleverly crafted book. Gut wrenching reality and red raw details, reminding us of what so many choose to ignore. Your heart, soul and spirit absorb the characters. You sub-consciously root for their survival. Perhaps we identify with more than we normaly care to admit. Their truth is the truth and our truth. The author never fails to loose the readers attention. Truly one of the best books I have read this year. A MUST READ.

The book is divided into three parts, the past the present and the future. This novel deals with a lot of issues that everyone may not be able to handle. It deals head on with phyiscal, mental, and emotional abuse of both children and adults. The book opens up as we follow Naomi talking to her therapist reliving her early childhood memories. The memories that Naomi shares are really sad. There are many chldren who sadly who were raised just like Naomi. The things that this child had to deal with bought on to her by the hands of her own mother and the things her mother allowed to happen was really crazy. Naomi grew up in a system that she ultimatly winds up working in as she gets older. She deals with children living with abusive parents and tries to find homes for them. You can tell that the author really did her research or that this type of story was very close to home for her.

I give the story a 4.5 there was a part or two i thought was dragging so i kind of read it a little faster then the rest of the story. Overall it was a really good read, fast paced and I read it quickly. Again the book does deal with a touchy subject so if you arent one who can stomach reading certain things then you may have to think twice. I saw on some reviews people said edting was horrible... i didnt see that i saw i believe one sentence where a word was missing but nothing major at all. Theres a lot that can be said about the book but I dont want to give anything away. The reader will be suprised at some of the things taking place especially the twist in the story. Overall really good job cant wait to see what else this author will have for her readers.

This novel immediately has placed Nakia R. Laushaul amongst my favorite Authors, she had me hooked in after the first few paragraphs. I found myself making excuses to break away from whatever else i was doing to read and find out what happened next. From Naomi to Xavier and even Mona; i was completely captured with their stories and yearning to learn more. I felt a full range of emotions as i experienced each character from anger, disgust, joy, shock, and a lot of humor.
Nakia tells a tale of unspoken evils and brings awareness to the scars that they leave for generations.
