Overview

Samantha never intended to kill the President. As a doctor, she swore an oath to protect life – not take it. But that was before he ordered the murder of her family.

Swept from the frigid New York City winter, Dr. Samantha Bartlett returns to the Midwest to once again confront the sting of death – and face those she left behind. But she’s not alone. A strange man she dubs “Shades” haunts her every step as she seeks answers to the inferno which claimed her grandmother’s life, an eerie reminder of her parents’ deaths. The secrets Samantha uncovers forever shatter the image of those she only thought she knew.

Confronted by Shades, Samantha joins a secret underworld known only as the Elite, where a web of power and control is woven deep within governments worldwide. Their sights are set on the seat of domination behind the Resolute desk that is the powerhouse of nations – the presidency of the United States of America. Samantha becomes the Elite’s unlikely key to infiltrating the White House at its most intimate levels.

The Hippocratic Oath. All doctors swear by it. But the most despicable deeds must be avenged. The quest for blood swallows Samantha in a veil of darkness and threatens to destroy everything she once stood for.

And from the darkness there is no escape.

    530 pages

This book is 530 pages long, well edited, has a good flow and is rather unique. There is very detailed murder, violence and sex. A lot of sex in fact. It is about a resident doctor, who is unwillingly recruited into an espionage group, named The Elite. Her training is hard and very involved. Part of it requires her to have plastic surgery to enhance her feminine attributes. Now , this next comment, might be construed as a plot spoiler, but it is only a small part of the plot, but it is also the reason, I gave this book one star. She is trained to have sex, with the president of the United States, in the manner he enjoys most. Unfortunately, the prez is also her father, and she states she enjoys the sex with him also. I am not into incest. YUCK! This book is part of a series and has a cliff hanger ending. The next book has to be purchased. It seems that after 530 pages there should be some sort of resolution, but nope, nothing is solved. Thus, my one star rating. For adults.....for me, this book was taboo and a big waste of time. Not chick lit.

waste of time, stupid, and sick

This is a page turner, but partway in it turns into long descriptions of sick, detailed sex and the plot starts relying on stupid, totally implausible science fiction style technology. I skimmed over the vast majority of this book, having gotten hooked before it turned weird and disgusting, with the hope for some explanations to the original mystery. However, there is no real resolution at the end, just more unanswered questions. The story apparently continues in the next book. Don't waste your time on this garbage.

    Not Impressed At All

As far as I'm concerned, reading this book was/is a vast waste of time. It brought to mind those "movie serials" of the 1940's where some mad scientist or crazy doctor is out to conquer the world coupled with another, much later movie, "The Chairman." I tried to find some redeeming qualities in this book, but unfortunately I couldn't.

Running Into the Darkness starts on a journey that takes place

Running Into the Darkness starts on a journey that takes place in New York City, Washington D.C. and America's heartland, and entices the reader to put their life on hold until book's end. A secret organization called the Elite, has manipulated key events in the life of Dr. Samantha Barlett, leading her into their realm of political intrigue and murder. Secrets from the beautiful doctor's past draw her to an encounter with the President of the United States. Suddenly her reasons for taking down the President coincide with those of the Elite. Political machinations, international alliances and a primal urge for revenge collide on the streets of our nation's capital. Running Into the Darkness takes off quickly and doesn't loosen it's hold on the reader until the last page.

    Unsettling and Addictive

Did I enjoy this book: It’s dark. It’s sexy. It’s everything that’s wrong with the world. I loved it.

I’m not sure who the good guys are; I’m not even sure there ARE any good guys. I wasn’t sure I wanted Samantha to kill the President, but I wasn’t sure she shouldn’t, either. I’m left with a sense of paralyzing ambivalence – one I think members of the Elite feel too (though if there was a gun to my head I’d likely overcome my paralysis just as they do).

Bale’s lack of delicacy will definitely scare away the faint-hearted, but in Running’s grayscale world, even a pinch of romance would feel disingenuous. So. Conspiracy? Check. Secret dark underworld? Check. Sad, confused characters who do sad, confusing things? Check. I’m pretty sure there’s never even a sunny day on Samantha’s earth. Running into the Darkness is unsettling and addictive. I can’t wait to see what Samantha does next.

Would I recommend it: If you’re into dark, dystopian realities (and you’re not afraid of some seriously confusing sex), you’ll love it. I don’t think my Mom would enjoy it, but I’m pretty sure r/conspiracy will devour it.

Will I read it again: Maybe, but I’ll certainly review it before the next book in the series comes out, and I’ll DEFINITELY read that!

I received this book for a fair and honest review.  This book is a page turner and keeps you guessing. I can usually figure out the twists and turns. I did not with this book. I was constantly surprised and anxious to see what would happen.

Nothing in Samantha's life is what she thought it was. She got mixed up with the Elite and thought she was going to make things right. Unfortunately things even with the Elite things are not what they seem. I don't want to spoil it but wow was there a plot aspect I didn't see coming at all!

I think this book would make for a great movie. There were times when reading the book I thought if not a movie, it would make for a great episode the show 24 on Fox. It was that action packed.

I can't wait to read the sequel and see what happens with Samantha. The ending of this book left me gasping and wanting more!

Wild attention grabbing.  Deranged intriguing.  Great plot and story line.  The more I read the more into it I got.
Who is lying  Who is telling the truth.
Did the Pres really rape Sam's mother or did he really love her.
The Elite forced her to kill him.  Now she is alone and on the run.
Must have the 2nd book of this series.

    Great read!

Only thing I did not like about this book was the fact that it is the first part of a sequel. I look forward to reading the follow-up.

    No longer 530pages

I dont know if people were trying to trick people by saying it's 530 pages or what. However, i bought the book and was surprised to see that is 200something pages. If you like this book, watch the movie "Naked Weapon". Rated R movie. Children under 20 really shouldnt be watching this.

Dr. Samantha Bartlett is a personally flawed but likeable character that goes from the life of an ER resident into the life of a superspy. This page turning novel delves into current political intrigue, an "Elite" superspy organization, with page turning "oh my god" scenarios. "Running into the Darkness" is a pulse pumping romp into the world of double agency that will leave you sweaty and wanting more. From the darkness there is no escape, but bring a flashlight to read by.

Samantha Bartlett doesn't realize what she's getting into until the bad guys have their hooks into her. The story takes off from there and doesn't let go. A non-stop, heart-pounder for sure. The end just about made me jump off a cliff! Now onto the next one in this series.
