Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
Subtitled "A Mystery in Carlsbad Caverns National Park," this is a clever and exciting look at a national treasure. Most of the characters and the plot are fiction, but the setting and many of the details are real. It is a sneaky way to get children to learn about bats, caves, and the history of the parks. In subplots, we also learn about diabetes and the plight of abused children. Three children try to join a tour in a remote part of the caverns. They are lost when their foster brother is frightened by the condition of their temporary guide and the extreme darkness of the cave. He runs from the group and his foster siblings go after him. The kids work together to get back to the entrance. A rescue is conducted by a real-life caver. In addition to the facts in the text, there is a good map and an afterword with details. The National Geographic and authors' websites are also available for more details. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
