Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
What can the leaders of today learn from the heroes of the Old Testament? Quite a bit, says leadership expert John C. Maxwell. In the face of seemingly rampant corporate crime, the examples these icons set can become a great source of both spiritual and motivational guidance.

    Two Fold Premise

This book has two benefits for the readers. First, it will familiarize you with the "giants" of the Old Testament. Second, it will teach how to emulate, to learn, from their lives. This is one of Maxwell's finest.

    Great for younger adults

In commercials, this book was made to sound like some sort of exceptional new wisdom source from years of Biblical research. While it does have practical lessons based on Old Testament figures, it was actually sort of elementary and did not really go beyond what a sixth-grader learns in Sunday School. I guess I would recommend it for a gift to kids - it would certainly inspire them to stand up for what's right and decent to do, and these lessons are good for all of us. I suppose I just expected more. Great gift for say graduation or something for youth groups. Includes study guide for discussion.

    more from this reviewer

Learn from History about God's relationship with man.

Maxwell, in his typical refreshing style, provides relevant examples of how the Christian patriarchs' lives have significant meaning for our lives today. I had grown frustrated that too much of Christian teaching focuses only on the New Testament. This book will open your eyes to a new level of relevance regarding the Old Testament and how it can apply to your life.

It's about faith, no practical application.

Mr. Maxwell's book stages a seminar on an image - running the distance (for a goal) with biblical characters. The book's character's are questionable in the way it presents their assumed feelings and advice. True, one of the main components in a leader is faith, but what happen to the know-how? I give three stars for this book only because of my belief and respect for the biblical content, and no stars given for the book's lack of practical application. The author could have at least given some proverbs or palms from the bible.

    A small, God-inspired book

This small book is so full of the knowledge, history, of the heros,we only know by surface reading. We are truly running in a race and this book helps to keep me on track. You get the sense that you are actually running and talking with the Old Testament heros, even the ones we have given little mentions to. It is very inspiring and the reflective questions really reflect on one's own life.

    Another winner!

Another great book by John Maxwell. The concept of running a race and meeting biblical heroes along the way is unique and interesting. Short chapters but full of thought provoking insights. I read each chapter at least twice.
