Packed with action, romance and historical intrigue, Rurouni Kenshin is one of the most beloved and popular manga series worldwide. Set against the backdrop of the Meiji Restoration, it tells the saga of Himura Kenshin, once an assassin of ferocious power, now a humble rurouni, a wandering swordsman fighting to protect the honor of those in need.

A hundred and fifty years ago in Kyoto, amid the flames of revolution, there arose a warrior, an assassin of such ferocious power he was given the title Hitokiri: Manslayer. With his bloodstained blade, Hitokiri Battosai helped close the turbulent Bakumatsu period and end the reign of the shoguns, slashing open the way toward the progressive Meiji Era. Then he vanished, and with the flow of years became legend.

In the 11th year of Meiji, in the middle of Tokyo, the tale begins. Himura Kenshin, a humble rurouni, or wandering swordsman, comes to the aid of Kamiya Kaoru, a young woman struggling to defend her father's school of swordsmanship against attacks by the infamous Hitokiri Battosai. But neither Kenshin nor Battosai are quite what they seem...

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Fans of the popular Rurouni Kenshin anime TV series, available on DVD and shown on Cartoon Network, have been asking for years for the original Kenshin manga that inspired the anime to be released in English. Viz has now fulfilled that wish. In Japan during the 1860s, Kenshin Himu ra was a feared assassin, fighting the warriors of the Shogun to restore the Emperor to power. But after his side achieved victory, Kenshin disappeared, and now, 11 years later, he is a rurouni (a wanderer) who will no longer kill. In this first volume, Kenshin helps swordswoman and instructor Kaoru Kamiya defeat the murderers attempting to take over her dojo (training hall). Charmed by her philosophy of "swords that give life," he decides to stay with her. The book also introduces Kaoru's young student Yahiko and the edgy Sanosuke, master of the zanbato, the heaviest sword ever made. Watsuki's detailed art is excellent, with explosive swordfighting scenes, and the characters and story are compelling. With some explicit violence, this is rated "for older teens," but it will interest adults as well. With its popularity and low price, this is easily recommended for all collections. Best Manga EVER!

I first read this manga two years ago, and to this day, after reading literally hundreds of manga, it is still my FAVORITE manga EVER!! It is MORE than worth reading! d^^b The story just gets better and BETTER the more you read!! Pretty soon you'll be wishing there was a real Kenshin as awesome as the manga version!! XDDD And when people ask you which is better: ninja or pirates, you'll be screaming out: SAMURAI!!!! (that's how addicted I am anyway... XD)

    ME

RUROUNI KENSHIN is deffinitely my favorite manga series!!! I just started this series and I'm continuing to love it more and more with each page I read. I believe Nobuhiro Watsuki has a masterpiece here that can be loved through out the world by many different people. Rurouni Kenshin is pretty much about everything you can think of. It has romance, action, humor, and the list goes on. I will forever love these works of art!

    Greatest SJ title

I love Rurouni Kenshin. It is GREAT! It has action, humor and a little bit of romance. SJ went a little overboard with the T+ rating, though.... I'd say it is safe for anyone over the age of 12. It is a little violent though.

    Ch-yeah!

I only had to read the first few pages to know that I LOVED Rurouni Kenshin, my favorite characters have to be Himura and Kaoru o' course. The story line was again really clear, and the drawing is EXCELLENT.

KENSHIN IS ONE OF THE BEST ANIME/MANGA TO EVER EXIST!!!

As you can see I am a very crazed fan of the line. It is one of the first anime's I got into and the second manga I started to collect. If you like action and humor with a small splash of romance then this manga is for you. It is the best ever thought up.

    I love you Kenshin-sama!!

The first time I saw the anime, I was already hooked! I bought the manga as soon as it came out, and I have every volume so far. Kenshin is the coolest swordsmen ever! (He's quite good looking as well...) Anyway, the plot is intense and never boring. This is by far the best manga EVER!!

    LUV KENSHIN SAMA <3

first off, i'd like to say that this has been my favorite anime/manga series eversince i've been interested in the actual genre, now, i'm only 14, but when this manga came out just around my birthday, I realized i had to get it. It's just so action packed and hilarious. The characters suck you into the story and make it real. Though i have to complain for teh lack of color, everything else that Wa-san does with the plot is perfect

    Kenshin

Watsuki did well. Humor, violence, drama, great artwork... the essential ingridiants (sorry, I can't spell :( ) for a hit manga are all in here. All samurai fans should love it, and everyone else, too. The story at the end is one of Watsuki's first works, and is really good. The manga, in my opinion, is ten times better than the anime on Cartoon Network. All Kenshin anime fans should buy this.
