Overview

Packed with action, romance and historical intrigue, Rurouni Kenshin is one of the most beloved and popular manga series worldwide. Set against the backdrop of the Meiji Restoration, it tells the saga of Himura Kenshin, once an assassin of ferocious power, now a humble rurouni, a wandering swordsman fighting to protect the honor of those in need.

A hundred and fifty years ago in Kyoto, amid the flames of revolution, there arose a warrior, an assassin of such ferocious power he was given the title Hitokiri: Manslayer. With his bloodstained blade, Hitokiri Battosai helped close the turbulent Bakumatsu period and end the reign of the shoguns, slashing open the way toward the progressive Meiji Era. Then he vanished, and with the flow of years became legend.

In the 11th year of Meiji, in the middle of Tokyo, the tale begins. Himura Kenshin, a humble rurouni, or wandering swordsman, comes to the aid of Kamiya Kaoru, a young woman struggling to defend her father's school of swordsmanship against attacks by the infamous Hitokiri Battosai. But neither Kenshin nor Battosai are quite what they seem...

Rurouni Kenshin is a series I would recommend to any manga fan.

Hi I'm BATTOSAI and I'm a guy who loves manga, (my favorite is Rurouni Kenshin) that's why I'm writing this review. This is my first time writing a review so if it's crap I have an excuse, if it's good however I take full credit, so let's begin shall we.
Rurouni Kenshin VIZBIG Edition Vol. 1
Personal score 10 out of 10
    Age rating 14+
Genre Shonen (boy/men), action/adventure, comedy, romance.
Let's start with the format. The VIZBIG edition of Rurouni Kenshin has three volumes in one, full color pages, and loads of bonus content not included in the small 200 page tankobon volumes.
The characters in ruro ken are good, equally balanced, funny, and they each get a chance in the spot light so it's not just focused on one character, making the others useless, irrelevant and down right loser yes men.
The story is a masterpiece of well written dialog, tremendous adventure, and historical accuracy. Also the story flows very well in one direction, and when the story arcs switch it's seamless, so it's not stop and go all the time this makes for an enjoyable "sucks you in" experience, so much so that when your finished real life wont stack up to the radical awesomeness that is Rurouni Kenshin.
The action is comparable to that of Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto in saying there are intellectual deductions behind most of the moves and combat situations, and not just random beet downs that ensue (not that theirs anything wrong with that of course, ha-ha!)
Manga to anime, just go for the manga, the anime voice acting, music, and sound effects are sub-par, and the anime is so old you'd be lucky to even locate it.
In conclusion Ruroni Kenshin is a great manga that can be enjoyed by beginners, and the most radical manga otaku alike.
    With coolness, BATTOSAI.

    Great for first timers

I got this and its terrific. Especially if your like me and have never read this series but wanted to but didn't want to buy the 28 individual volumes.Outside of getting it being the first 3 complete volumes combined together the first several color pages have been restored to full color. This series is great if you like samurai action with a good blend of comedy along the way.
