Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Raphael C Sun, Doctorate of Medicine(University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This is the fifth edition of a question book designed to prepare residents for boards and specifically the ABSITE. The chapters are organized similar to a surgical textbook and cover basic and clinical science for every topic. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise review for surgery residents who are preparing for the ABSITE and board examinations. The goal is to provide information to keep up with the rapid changes and advances in surgical care. This book will help residents not only become better surgeons, but also become more knowledgeable and better prepared for their board examination.
Audience: Based on the questions, the book seems more appropriate for senior residents than junior residents. The junior ABSITE is more focused on basic science and this book adequately covers basic science, but it contains more clinical questions tailored for the senior ABSITE. Medical students could benefit from using this book, but it would probably not be of much use in preparing for the standardized NBME shelf, since the information is too advanced for medical students.
Features: This book covers a wide spectrum of surgical topics starting from the basics of surgical physiology to the fundamentals of surgical technology. It is divided into different organ systems and contains all the surgical specialties, covering almost every book chapter that would appear in a surgical textbook. This update has eliminated some chapters and added new ones, and it is shorter than the previous edition. The most important change from the fourth edition is in the format of the questions. What made previous editions difficult to read was the multiple-answer format questions. One question could have multiple correct answers and usually ended with, "all of the following except for" or "which of the following is true." Readers would not know how many correct answers there were for each question. The latest edition uses the format of select the best answer, which enables readers to definitively learn the correct information. Also, many of the answers in the previous edition were incorrect. From my experience so far, this problem has been addressed in this edition.
Assessment: I stopped using the previous edition because of the question format. The change to the format of select the best answer has made learning a lot easier. The information delivery has been simplified and this new version will do a better job preparing residents for the ABSITE and for the board examination.
