Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Diane M. Simeone, MD (University of Michigan Medical Center)
Description: This question-and-answer text is organized primarily by organ system, with each question immediately followed by a thorough yet concise answer for ease of use. Reference materials for each answer are listed immediately after the question.
Purpose: This third edition is designed to be a complete study guide on current general surgical knowledge.
Audience: The target audiences for this textbook are general surgery residents in training, young surgeons preparing for general surgery boards, those already certified who are preparing for the re-certification exam, and surgeons wishing to keep abreast of current surgical knowledge. Contributing editors include, principally, staff surgeons at Rush Medical College, but also include physicians with expertise in other fields to strengthen the textbook.
Features: The third edition has been expanded to 605 pages to cover new topics about which surgeons should be knowledgeable. Coverage of topics in general surgery is provided with fundamental information in the area of surgical subspecialties that a general surgeon would need to know for accreditation boards. This edition does include a stronger emphasis on basic science, which is particularly helpful for general surgical residents studying for the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination (ABSITE).
Assessment: This is an invaluable question-and-answer study guide on general surgical knowledge that should be an essential part of every general surgery resident's library and would serve as a powerful study tool for the established general surgeon.
