Captured in detail with vivid color photographs, this story begins as Russ goes "on duty" for the day. He helps inspect the fire equipment-the ax, fire hydrant, flashlight, ladders, fire truck-to make sure that it's all working OK. He also discovers that a very important job at the firehouse is keeping the equipment clean, so Russ and Uncle Jerry start scrubbing and rinsing. Even Sparky the Dalmatian gets a sudsy bath. After they're finished everything in the firehouse is sparkling-except for Russ, who's just a little bit wet! Young readers, first introduced to Russ in Russ and the Apple Tree Surprise, will enjoy catching up with him in his latest adventure. Books in this series—A Day with Russ—are fun and entertaining, but also serve as excellent tools for introducing the concepts of disability and inclusion at home and in school.

Russ, a five-year-old with Down syndrome, visits his uncle's firehouse and gets to help with the daily chores.

    Wonderful book!

My 4-year-old absolutely looooves this book. This year at her preschool there are a lot of kids who love fire engines, so we donated a copy of the book to her school. What a huge hit it's been! And what a lovely book about a fun-loving little boy. A simple book showcasing Russ' trip to the firehouse. How refreshing to see a book about a boy with Downs just showing him having a fun, adventurous day like any other boy would have. And refreshingly missing is the usual condescending 'all the kids thought the boy was different and weird but then they realized he had feelings like everyone else and they became friends' stuff. Yuck. I would highly, highly recommend this book to all children - those with special needs and those who just love fire trucks and firehouses like my little girl!
