Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One in the extensive series "The Land, People and Cultures" created by Bobbie Kalman, this edition features Russia and in particular, its culture. Gorgeous color photography and well-researched text describe the rich cultural heritage of Russia, both past and present. The book is divided into short paragraphs that illuminate the origins of Russian culture, its religions, holidays and festivals, art, architecture, music, dance, and literature and folk tales, for instance. Although Russia is, spatially, the largest and one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world, its rich traditions in the arts continue to be an important part of Russian life and a unifying factor for the country. Children in Russian schools are exposed to far more music, literature, art, and dance than in this country. The book provides an example of the Russian folktale, Baba Yaga, which has become popular in this country, as well. An extensive glossary and an index are included at the end. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
