Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
From the image of a nun drawing water near the Pontetayevsky Convent in 1904 to a shot of Russians joyfully swilling vodka in the post-Communist era, this photohistory offers an excellent overview of Russia's tragic history in the 20th century. The photographs were culled from numerous Russian archives, most previously sealed, and the result is a fresh and startling view of an embattled nation. The image of women harnessed to a barge in Tsarist Russia contrasts painfully with the group portrait of elegant young ladies at the Smolny Institute in St. Petersburg; other images move from the Communist takeover through the horrors of collectivization, World War II, and the Gulag to the achievements of the postwar years and the collapse of communism. The text is as good as the photos, which isn't often true in photo spreads like this; British journalist Moynahan neatly condenses Russia's history while retaining a flair for the telling anecdote. An excellent addition to history, photography, and subject collections.-Barbara Hoffert, "Library Journal"
From Barnes & Noble
This stunning photographic record covers the last century of Russian history, a century wracked by dizzying changes and cataclysmic events: wars, revolutions, purges, totalitarianism, and the sudden giddy joys of freedom. In these pictures you will see the contrast between the opulent world of the nobility and the hunger, disease, and poverty of peasant life. Portraits of anonymous soldiers, workers, children, and grandmothers are set alongside those of well-known Russian figures, from Nicholas II, Rasputin, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn to Nikita Khrushchev, Yuri Gagarin, and Boris Yeltsin. Here are vivid images of the 1917 revolution, life under Stalin, the Cold War, glasnost, and the chaos of modern Russia--a tapestry woven from the dramatic moments of history and the ordinary details of everyday life. This volume brings to life a hundred years of Russian history with a clarity never before seen in the West. 10" x 12 1/2". Black-and-white photos.

    A Very Rich Photographic Account

I was able to borrow a copy from a coworker for a week and was subsequently blown away by it. The pictures are fantastic and having them on hand while the story of Russia unfolds is immensely educational and entertaining. The author doesn't pull any punches either, Stalin and his predecessors weren't very nice to their people. My only complaint would be that I would have liked to see more content for the transition from WWII to modern times.

A picture says a thousand words!

Perhaps the most educational book on the Soviet Union I have ever seen. The kinds of pitures included tell a story that most authors would not be able to. I have spend hours thumbing through this book and pondering on what I have seen.

    Gotta check this one!

This book is a powerful educational tool that helped me get up to speed on the epic journey of Russia over the last hundred years. Everything you ever wanted to know but didn't learn in school. The pictures are fantastic! A real must read for history buffs or those interested.
