School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9 In the summer after seventh grade, Rusty Timmons starts a business, hoping to earn enough money to build a basketball court so that he can lure back his old friend Dan Brower, who is spending all his time with the new girl in town, Tiffany Smeltzer. Rusty's business partner, Ruthann Miller, is annoying but hardworking and competent, and Rusty eventually comes to respect and admire her. This is a book that never really comes together. While light in tone, it does not deliver enough laughs to sustain a rather tired plot that centers on Rusty's business dealings. The basic premisethat a youngster would spend his whole summer working to earn money to buy back a friendis difficult to swallow, and none of the characters is interesting or convincing enough to draw attention away from this fundamental flaw. Few readers will make it as far as Ruthann's near-fatal horse accident and the resulting tearful hospital scene, which is probably just as well.
