Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Traditional patchwork involves sewing together fabrics to form often symmetrical geometric designs with straight seams. McDowell, a quilter, teacher, and author known for her intricately pieced art quilts, works largely with curved seam lines. Using a freezer-paper template system, she here pieces together detailed images (e.g., landscapes or scenes with people and animals) instead of using appliqué to affix curved shapes to cloth. The resulting curved surfaces create a perception of movement and flow not possible with appliqué. Although there are two illustrative projects to give the reader an opportunity to play with McDowell's techniques, this is primarily a workshop in book form that teaches the already experienced quilter the piecing techniques the author has developed and refined over the years. An essential purchase for art quilt collections and large public libraries.
