Traditional patchwork involves sewing together fabrics to form often symmetrical geometric designs with straight seams. McDowell, a quilter, teacher, and author known for her intricately pieced art quilts, works largely with curved seam lines. Using a freezer-paper template system, she here pieces together detailed images (e.g., landscapes or scenes with people and animals) instead of using appliqué to affix curved shapes to cloth. The resulting curved surfaces create a perception of movement and flow not possible with appliqué.
