This book is like personal postcards we all get to read, a scrapbook we keep coming back to immerse ourselves in--the kind which touches the soul. In Casal's preface he says,"Photographs are the songs I cannot write; the music I hear in my head, but can't yet play. I search for something quiet in them, like the space between breaths." And this book is, indeed, the music, the breathing, the living of The Cardinals. Readers come to understand the "quiet" between shows, the intricate relationships and love between the members, and can relive the concerts these musicians' hearts and souls came together to give night after night. Not unlike art, it is a piece which I find myself reading and rereading--each time gleaning new respect and understanding of the magic created by the Cardinals. The timing is impeccable. With the recent passing of Chris Feinstein, readers are given his voice and what it meant to him to be on this journey. The Cardinals have this innate ability to make fans feel close--this book is closure for many of us who mourn his passing. This book is filled with images which can only be defined as art. The layers of meaning within each photograph speak volumes about the music, the band, and the magic created on each album and within each show. Certainly I am a fan of music--especially this band--but artistically this book stands on its own as a treasure.
