Overview

Jenny Samson, sister of Luke (book two) and daughter of Brant (book one), is a gifted artist. She has moved from her country home in Texas to attend Jake Ryder's Academy of Art in New York. She has long dreamed of meeting Mr. Ryder, the great artist known as the Painter of Emotions, but when she does, his criticism of her paintings devastates her.

Jake Ryder lost his right arm in a carriage accident. It was the final sorrow in a life of sorrow. Now he lives a lonely existence, rarely leaving his estate outside of New York city. The sweet paintings of Jenny Samson incense the artist in him because life is not sweet, nor kind, nor lovely, and he lashes out at the plain country girl during a gallery exhibition of her works. Soon, however, he will discover there is more to Jenny that he anticipated.

Meet the Author

My perfect day: Laptop; WiFi availability; Java Mocha; characters demanding their stories be told; a plot that comes together; and hours to live in an alternate reality. Afterward, I return home to wash dishes and vacuum.

Seriously, I have always loved reading, and now I love writing. As a preteen, I devoured Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mysteries. When I reached my teen years, the romance genre became my favorite and that has never changed. A few years ago, I decided to try my hand at writing and I've been doing so with a passion ever since. After writing a fantasy series, my current focus is western romance, both contemporary and historical. Because I hate saying goodbye to characters who have lived with me for months, I usually create a series so they can be revisited from book to book.

I also write under the pen name of Colleen Clay.

There is such emotional depth to this story.

The characters have gone through such emotional trauma and this is beautifully done by this author. I would have given it 5 stars, but I couldn't quite get past what Ryder did to Jenny. I understood his pain and confusion, but the fact that it took him over three years to contact her again, and then he only did it because he was forced to face what he had done to her made me just not like or trust him. If the time apart had been shorter, or we had seen him agonize more about missing her during those years apart, I might have trusted him more. As it was, I thought he was a completely selfish cad who understood what he did was wrong yet never tried to make it right until forced to see the consequences. Even then it was only because of Joy that he finally put his self pity aside long enough to go to Jenny. I found myself wondering if he ever would have contacted Jenny if it weren't for Joy. Jaunting around Europe for three years did not sound like he was suffering. Other than not liking the male lead, though, the story was very well written.
