Almost every letter gets a double spread devoted to a poem, several paragraphs about the topic, and a gorgeous illustration that supports the text beautifully. For those that have single pages, the poem is overlaid on the lovely art and the more dense text is set off in a color-coordinated side bar. But whatever the physical layout, each letter has an abundance of information, ideas, and suggestions for improving whatever aspect of ecological awareness is being discussed. Because of the two dimensions of text this title can be used with students who are in upper elementary grades (if introduced properly so that they are not off put by the alphabet format). Some of the rhymes make a huge stretch to work but many are charming and make the information accessible to younger students: "Pick a spot and leave your mark./We've come to letter P./Help our planet to breathe better. P is plant a tree." The sidebar text includes the line "A single tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide in its lifetime, so why not plant some yourself?" Educators will find this a good resource for Earth Day projects and students will learn a variety of approaches to helping our Earth, including "X is for xeriscaping" which discusses creating gardens that do not require very much water and "V is vermincomposting" which describes how to create natural fertilizer by using worms to digest food scraps. I'm inspired to start a "worm farm" myself. There are numerous websites listed in the backmatter, including many for general information, specific subjects, and a section "just for the kids." For each letter, an eight-line poem introduces a tip for protecting the environment. Lengthy sidebars accompany each verse and provide more detailed information. The book is illustrated with acceptable watercolor paintings. The sidebars are well written, but the poetry is sometimes awkward and occasionally feels forced. The content presents useful advice, though many of the suggestions are aimed at things adults can do, such as composting and improving the insulation in their home, and forgoing items made of ivory or animal skins. However, important information has occasionally been left out. For example, the entry for the letter "B" discusses the uses of compact fluorescent lights. Although the text cautions about handling broken bulbs due to mercury content, it doesn't explain that these bulbs need to be properly recycled. Overall, though, this is an interesting starting point for a class researching a wide range of environmental topics.-Lindsay Cesari, Baldwinsville School District, NY
