Overview

In the 1930s, '40s and '50s, no one had a more symbiotic relationship than Decca Records did with the music of George Gershwin. Gershwin's songs were the perfect interpretive fodder for the company's wide variety of pop and jazz artists, and with Decca's stronghold on the market (along with Columbia and RCA Victor), a lot of those tunes passed from pop hits into standard evergreens in their hands. This 20-track collection brings together some of the very best, ranging in interpretations from jazz folks like Jimmy Dorsey ("Embraceable You"), Louis Armstrong ("Love Walked In"), Connie Boswell ("Soon"), Billie Holiday ("I Loves You, Porgy"), Ella Fitzgerald ("My One and Only"), Peggy Lee ("Somebody Loves Me") and Carmen McRae ("They All Laughed") to pop crooners like Dick Haymes ("For You, For Me, Forever More"), Mel Tormé ("Love Is Here to Stay"), and Steve Lawrence ("Isn't It a Pity?") to movie stars like Bing Crosby ("But Now for Me"), Sammy Davis, Jr. ("I Got Plenty of Nuttin'"), Al Jolson ("Liza") and Judy Garland ("I Got Rhythm"). Selections from Teresa Brewer, Felicia Saunders, Jeri Southern, Sylvia Sims and the Andrews Sisters complete the package.
