Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Ralph J. Damiano, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This book has set the standard in cardiothoracic surgery textbooks, and this eighth edition is no exception. It summarizes the essential clinical topics with up-to-date information written by the world's leaders in their fields in three major sections: thoracic surgery, adult cardiac surgery, and congenital heart surgery. New and revised chapters reflect the key changes and advances in this rapidly evolving, exciting specialty since the 2005 edition.
Purpose: It is intended to comprehensively review all important topics in cardiothoracic surgery in a concise and organized fashion, with each chapter summarizing each topic in great depth. This is an invaluable resource for the specialty.
Audience: It is written mainly for cardiothoracic surgeons of all levels: from practicing surgeons who need references for everyday practice to residents who are preparing for their specialty boards. However, it is also useful for any physicians and students who are interested in the diseases of the chest. The authors of the chapters are internationally recognized leaders in their fields.
Features: This update covers the rapidly evolving new areas in the specialty, such as the treatment of atrial fibrillation and stent grafting for thoracoabdominal aortic disease, which are excellent. Illustrations in the book and the online video are superior in quality and are appropriate in quantity. The Expert Consult functionality is a very useful tool, allowing readers to easily access the text in its entirety online from virtually anywhere using an Internet connection.
Assessment: This is simply the most comprehensive textbook in the specialty. It reviews all the important topics in an organized fashion and in great depth. The rapidly evolving nature of the specialty demands the replacement of the previous edition with this new updated edition.
