Overview

This sonorous choral album will transport you to the cavernous, candlelit churches of Russia. The rich sounds of the male choirs -- with their deep, comforting bass tones and complex harmonies -- create a rather divine feather bed of sound. Sink in and relax, take some deep breaths, and let the slow vibrations massage your cells. Although the liner notes do not include texts, the titles themselves tell you a lot: "The Mercy of Peace," "Peaceful Light," and "Amen, Alleluia." These a cappella choral works are mostly by 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century composers like Rachmaninov and Taneyev, but the spirit of these selections harks back the dark, smoky-flavored religious music of Russia's ancient Orthodox traditions. Featuring a half dozen top Russian choirs and recorded in different locations, this harmonious program envelops you in a warm and timeless ambiance.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Steve Huey
Sacred Treasures III: Choral Masterworks from Russia and Beyond collects more excerpts from spiritual, chant-oriented works by mostly Russian choirs; Rachmaninov is the most heavily featured composer, and the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir (conducted by Nikolai Korniev) and the Russian State Symphony Cappella (conducted by Valeri Polyanskii) are the two most heavily featured performers. Overall, the music is somewhat austere in its majesty, but its dramatic tension makes it a sublimely moving experience.
