Overview

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes: 25th Anniversary Edition DESCRIPTION: For twenty-five years, middle-grade readers have been moved by this telling of Sadako Sasaki's spirited battle with leukemia. She was two-years-old when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II, and dizzy spells began when she was twelve. She faced the disease with an irrepressible spirit and focused her energy (and that of everyone who knew her) on folding 1000 paper cranes, which Japanese legend held would prompt the gods to make her well again. Eleanor Coerr crafted this story of Sadako's twelfth year after reading the book of her letters her classmates compiled after her death.

This special edition contains a bio of Eleanor Coerr with details about her work on this book and instructions for folding paper cranes.

"An extraordinary book, one no reader will fail to find compelling and unforgettable." (Booklist, starred review)

"The story speaks directly to young readers of the tragedy of Sadako's death and, in its simplicity, makes a universal statement for 'peace in the world.'" (The Horn Book)

Hospitalized with the dreaded atom bomb disease, leukemia, a child in Hiroshima races against time to fold one thousand paper cranes to verify the legend that by doing so a sick person will become healthy.

'One of the most emotional books we've read.

Our third grade class just finished reading Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. We really enjoyed the book because it taught us a lot about Japan's culture and some of its recent history. We learned how our country's decision to drop the bomb affected so many families in Hiroshima. The book taught us not to give up hope even when things get tough. We enjoyed using Sadako's stategy of folding origami cranes to help keep her spirits up. It was fun to compare our two cultures and to find out that although we seem different, we are really very much alike. We recommend this book to kids aged 8 and up because younger kids might have a hard time with the subjects of war and death. We hope that you will enjoy this book as much as we did!

    Simply wonderful

My fifth grade class read this. Now that I'm in 8th grade it makes me cry to think about her story. It is a story about life and love. Undying love. Totally recommend to anyone (mainly older children so they can understand the meaning). This a wonderful book.

    No way to describe

This book is amazing. I had my english teache read it to us and it was so sad. I tried not to cry but, i did. IN CLASS!!!! All of my friends and classmates were staring at me... but it was so touching... i acutally wrote a report on hiroshima and was even more depressed. Buy this book and read it!! Although its a short book... it really makes you think at night how bad hiroshima got hit with the atom bomb. Like i said there is no way to decribe how amazing and touching this story is... i love it. If ou are looking for a good book to read then you have come to the right place. Please fellow nook owners... buy this book. (Oh great i sound like a bad sales person. Teehee). I highly recomend this book. If you like, The Help, A thousand years, or Beyond the burning time, you will fall in love will this book. Sorry i have written a lot but really for this book... you need to write a lot. The only down fall about this extrordinary book is that you will cry. A LOT!!!!?. No matter if you are male ir female, young or old, white or black, you will love this book........*************†**************** you ¿ this book = <3. Like i said earlieer......... you will cry a lot; so have you tissues in hand.
