Overview

This beauty is no greenhorn-and she's about to rope the man of her dreams.

Cattleman Bran Turner is left shorthanded during busy calving season when a bull tramples his hired hand. Rural Wyoming isn't exactly a hotbed of qualified candidates, and the only applicant for the position is the pampered town beauty, Harper Masterson. The curvy cowgirl gets under Bran's skin at every turn, but with no other options, he reluctantly hires her.

When sexual sparks ignite, down-on-her-luck Harper enjoys convincing Bran that not only is she capable of pulling calves, feeding livestock, and handling backbreaking ranch chores, but she doesn't mind getting down and dirty, either. Harper also discovers the hot-bodied cowboy isn't all work and no horseplay...and he's got more than a few tricks up his sleeve.

Bran will learn quickly that Harper is no country mouse-and that she might just have what it takes to stick around for the long haul.

Overpriced - beware but haven't read the story yet

Just wanted you to be aware that this is only 259 pages and I paid $9.99 for it. The first book in the series, "Corralled" is only 259 pages. I'm sure it is a good read as I love Lorelei James but I feel ripped off on the price. B&N needs to put the amount of page numbers in description. For that much money, I expected a pretty long read based on content/prices in the "Rough Riders" series.

Really liked this one better than book #1. I laughed so hard during the first 1/4 of the book. You can't help but love the characters.

    Didn't cut it with me

Every so often I try and read an erotica, hoping the genre improves. But I'm not seeing it, and it's no small wonder people shake their heads and roll their eyes at erotica. RT rated this story with 4 stars. I care to give it only 2 ½ . It wasn't because the sentence structure was all that terrible, but the story line itself was pretty vanilla with very little substance. Okay, so Harper and Bran get to know each other a little in the beginning. But the rest of the story is based pretty much on emotionless sex typical of erotica. I didn't see the two falling in love through page 182, where I finally gave up. Only that they were in lust for each other, which doesn't make for a lasting relationship. By the time I got to the spanking sex scene I was numb-not only because it lacked emotion, but also because of the word choices the author used cheapened the relationship between the two characters. It's not that I'm all that shocked by the F or C word or by the other vulgar language I saw, but being beat over the head with it grows really tiresome, plus it makes the characters look as though they have no respect for each other, cheapening their relationship even further. I'm all for realistic smoking, graphic LOVE SCENES with genuine emotion behind the story, but this story didn't cut mustard with me. What's sad is this is how our younger people today view as love. It's no small wonder the divorce rate is so high. Then they can't understand why their relationships tank.

Yee-Ha Ride'm Cowgirl! OMG, Singe the Pages Hot!!

Liberty, Harper, and Bailey weren't fortunate to possess the luxuries of having a normal upbringing. Being knee-deep with the tarnished reputation, Dawn, their mother had so graciously bestowed upon them.

Having an affair with a well-known patron of Muddy Gap, Wyoming, who happened to be married at the time, Dawn's own boss. After running off with him, she left her daughters to fend for themselves. In the interim of this travesty from occurring, Liberty had already enrolled herself into the military, and has been deployed to Afghanistan. Which meant Harper, had no choice to quit college, and resume the roll of caregiver to Bailey, the youngest child.

Everything was going as planned, they would stay in Muddy Gap, until Bailey decided which college to attend once she graduated high school. Yet a wrecking-ball crashed into Harper's well devised plan, when she was dismissed from one of her part-time jobs (The Tan Your Hide Beauty Emporium). Thanks to the lousy economy, jobs in Muddy Gap were scarce and few.

Then fate reared its head, Celia, Harper's best friend, called when she had a break from the CRA. Harper didn't want to rehash her disappointment onto Celia, especially if she was having some good fortune on the road, and be a jinx for her instead. But usually as good friends go, they normally already know something is wrong without you uttering one word. Celia finally pries the lid off of Harper's secret. Celia promises to call Harper back, and hopefully has a solution for her.

Celia's brothers Hank & Abe's best friend, Bran Turner owns his own ranch, and has been in dire need of some help since his ranch-hand was injured on the job. Celia makes a quick phone call to Bran, explaining to him she has the perfect ranch-hand in mind, and that person will be at his front door within the hour. Hanging up on Bran before he could answer.

When Harper arrives at Bran's ranch, he absolutely flabbergasted to see the former Beauty Queen at his front door. The same woman he has been attracted to since their early childhood, she was considered jail-bait if he succumbed to his well-hidden desire. How in the world was Bran going to work side-by-side with Harper? Especially since he cannot focus on anything but her when she's around.

With Harper's sassiness and determination, eventually Bran's well-devised plan will be SHOT to H*LL. Once he's gotten a taste of her, he wouldn't be able to have enough. The chemistry between them was ELECTRIFYINGLY RED-HOT!! Harper trusted Bran to no avail, & yet all she wanted from him was DEVOTION & AN UNDENYING LOVE.

BUT WILL THAT BE ENOUGH TO MAKE HARPER STAY & NOT LEAVE WITH BAILEY WHEN SHE GRADUATES?

This was my first novel written by Ms. James, and I know I've said this before, but I truly wish to completely pursue it, IT DEFINIATELY WON'T BE MY LAST!!

When it can't get any HOTTER, I'm KNOCKED OFF BALANCED BY A FIREBALL THROWN MY WAY, COURTSEY OF MS. JAMES.

NO ONE CAN WRITE EROTIC, UNADULTERED PLEASURES THAN SHE. WELL DONE MS. JAMES THIS NOVEL DESERVES NOTHING SHORT OF A 10 STAR RATING!!!

    Definitely a must read!!!

This book has it all. Great storyline, wonderful dialogue with well-developed characters and hot and steamy sex. Bran is the quintessential cattleman/rancher and Harper is not your typical beauty queen. There are plenty of fireworks and sparks ignited between these two, and author Lorelei James has managed to weave another fabulous and fresh story about the folks from Muddy Gap, Wyoming. Just as Ms. James enthralled and entertained us with the McKays in her Rough Rider Series, the Blacktop Cowboys are sure to do the same!! Highly recommend if you love a great story and romance!!

    Great Love Story

Finished SAS last night and absolutely loved it. Bran and Harper make a great couple. I loved reading the evolution of Bran realizing his feelings for Harper. I admire Harper for all she had to overcome in her life. The book had some really funny parts and some really emotional parts. All around great!

    an enjoyable ranch romance

In Muddy Gap, Wyoming Tan Your Hide beauty emporium owner Alice Samuels fires Harper Masterson as she no longer needs the help since she is shutting down the storefront to sell her products from her home. Harper needs temporary employment for a few months to cover bills for her and her sister Bailey before her sibling begins college. She plans to leave town once Bailey starts school as both will have new beginnings.

The only position available is working for Bran Turner pulling calves at his ranch; a man she has had a few arguments with. However, she is stunned when he hires her as besides their dispute, she lacks experience. He is surprised that she is diligent, intelligent and hard working as he assumed he hired a cotton candy former beauty queen. He especially appreciates her manner with animals. As they fall in love, Renner Jackson enters Harper's life and Bran's injured permanent employee Les returns to work; but it is his trust issues that causes the wedge bigger than the Grand Tetons.

The second Blacktop Cowboys (see Corralled) is an enjoyable ranch romance as each of the lead couple hides secrets from the other that lead to suspicion between them. The support cast is strong and the setting of rural Wyoming enhancing the problems that both face, especially the heroine. Readers will enjoy this wonderful contemporary.

Another great romp by Lorelei James

This story takes place in the town of Muddy Gap, Wyoming. Sound quaint? Not really. No B & B's for this little place. Former local beauty queen Harper Masterson (love the Name) has a drunken skank for a mother that ran off and left her to look out for her younger sister, Bailey, who is a Senior in high school. The oldest sister, Liberty, is enlisted in the Army and currently stationed in Afghanistan. Momma Masterson ran off with some local putz, pissed off everyone in town, leaving Harper strapped for friends and employment choices. She holds down two jobs to support herself and Bailey, who is supposedly going to college in the Fall, and Harper plans to move to wherever Bailey goes to school to supply her younger sister with monetary and moral support. When she gets axed at the local tanning salon because of slow business, Harper is understandably distraught. Like a ray of light her best friend Celia calls in Harper's time of woe, and gets an earful of sobs. But Celia has a devious plan for her BFF... Enter Bran Turner-
Bran Turner is a rangy local cowboy who owns a modest ranch outside of town that he inherited from his Grandparents. He runs it himself along with his old and grumpy right hand, Les. When Poor Les has a little mishap with a bull, rendering him useless for a few months, Harper shows up at Bran's door, ready to make some cash, mend fences, and start birthin' some bovine babies.
We all know that chaos ensues at this point.
There was a lot of give and take between Harper and Bran. He wasn't weak and neither was she. They both wanted to be worthy of each other, and had genuine love and affection, not just lust. Their banter was hilarious and is current with the times.
Love Scenes- In my opinion, this book and its predecessor, Corralled, are not as erotic as the Rough Riders series. Saddled and Spurred is very, very, hot, but the love scenes didn't feel like as much of the focus of the book as some of James' previous works.
All in all an excellent book and can't wait for more!!

    I Also Recommend:

    Romantic, Sweet and Great Read

This is a wonderful book. The lead characters are memorable, real and likeable. Harper, the beauty queen with a humble and decent personality is just wonderful. She is so completely unaware of how beautiful she is! Bran is a hard-working rancher who doesn't want to take advantage of Harper because he sees what a good person she is and that makes him a great cowboy. I really liked this book because none of the characters were "over the top" and the romance story was always the most interesting part of the book. Yes, there surely was some hot sexy love scenes, and it was all love scenes and not nasty erotica. This was my first book by this author and I so loved her writing and stories that I have since read her other books about wonderful cowboys and the strong women they love.

Another Great Read by Lorelei James

Excellent book...the kind you can't wait to read but don't want to end... But then again that holds true with all her books. Ms James creates characters that draw you in with their story. I love this series!
