Overview

Truly a one-of-a-kind, how-to-do-it book, this small volume responds to a very real hunger for self-awareness and holistic living. It consists of a series of spiritual exercises for entering the contemplative state -- blending psychology, spiritual therapy, and practices from both Eastern and Western traditions.

Anthony de Mello offers here an unparalleled approach to inner peace that brings the whole person to prayer -- body and soul, heart and mind, memory and imagination. In forty-seven exercises that teach things such as awareness of physical sensations, stillness, healing of hurtful memories, and consciousness of self and world, de Mello succeeds in helping all who have ever experienced prayer as difficult, dull, or frustrating. The essential key, he notes, is to journey beyond mere thought-forms and discover satisfying new depths in prayer from the heart. This allows for a greater sense of awareness amid silence, and disposes the one who prays to untold riches, spiritual fulfillment, and ultimately, a mystical experience of God-centeredness. Drawing on Scripture, as well as insights from Eastern and Western spiritual masters, the author has a unique appeal that transcends time, culture, and religious background.

For many years a bestseller in the English language, Sadhana has now been translated into more than two dozen foreign languages. Readers the world over have eagerly received this sincere spiritual leader, who has led many toward the wealth of insight and spirit that dwells within them.

    Wisdom Revealed

This book is an outstanding example of tolerance and proof that truth is one, however the wise call it by many names. Anthony De Mello is an exceptional man and in this book he shares with us the basics on how to get started in a REAL relationship with God. De Mello teaches how to take the prayer from our heads to our hearts in these pages, which is where it should come from in the first place. Unfortuneately we have been conditioned so long to pray superficially and with no sense of focus. Contemplation and meditation are instrumental tools in a successful relationship with God. These tools are taught to us in this book by De Mello who conveys care, confidence and understanding in each page. De Mello guides us through this path using his own personal experiences, making these methods tangible and very real. Any Christian that claims this book is misleading has been misled themselves. Dogma and conventional church law are not the objective in this book, expanding your personal relationship with God is. This is a book for an open heart...not a closed mind.

    Labels....all labels

One need only read a few pages of Tony to be immersed into a new world of spirituality. Rather, this world is not new this world is the world of the ancient mystics and adogmatists. These faithful heretics experienced god beyond labels: beyond the everyday, divisive labels to which we cling stubbornly. To say that Tony wasn't Christian is not unlike saying he wasn't human. He experienced god, jesus, and life in that venerable tradition of Meister Eckhart, Rumi, Buddha, and Jesus. Beyond labels is scary and it is no wonder that the above reviewer reacts so harshly. Dogma, orthodoxy, and labels are comfortable there is no need to think, fear, or struggle when you have labels. They function as something to which one may grasp to upright one's self in times of turmoil. However, the moment one lets go and experiences awareness, true awareness, the former self dies and out of the fire and ashes of lost security comes a refreshed phoenix-like sense of life's depth, breadth, and beauty.
