    Good book, but violent.

In "Sadistic Boys" there were many graphic male-male sex scenes. The bdsm covered in this volume was the violent kind, including topics such as dubious consent (close to rape) and potential abuse between partners. The consent problems bothered me. Also, I am not into "blood play" or "forced" consent.

The drawing style was sharp. And, the dialogue moved the story along well. The plot was interesting and, yet, a bit disturbing. There were a few short stories and one long tale contained in this graphic novel. It is the first in a series.

This was a serious manga for people into the extremes of bdsm. It was not my "cup of tea", as they say. However, others may enjoy it if they are into "edge play".

    Knowing your limits

This is actually the first volume of the Sadistic Boy series as evident by the title to the volume being present in Japanese on the cover. It’s very puzzling why the #1 is omitted from the English cover (or not tagged onto the listing), as well as the English translation of the Japanese title” Kiss to an accomplice” which was present on the original cover. The first boy’s love story Tori Maia did is included in the book as well.

I was originally hesitant to pick this title up because of the setting, but I love the artist’s work in Zettaireido. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised reading this example of what else she has put out. This story presents a dark side of BDSM, its characters lapsing more into the clinical or criminal. And, it contains a couple of things you don’t usually see in boy’s love manga. Yet there is also the romantic and devoted ideal woven through. While I think the creator has presented the characters fairly well with her classic psychological viewpoint, they might still defy the understanding of many readers. But, again this book is only a third of the story. There are some potentially offensive ideas at work too. Unfortunately in terms of a recommendation, this manga seems to be one even readers of BDSM might need to see some of before knowing if it’s for them or not.

The art style isn’t what one is used to seeing these days or really from the last decade, even though this book is from 2001. Characters even seem a little androgynous sometimes. I love the aesthetics though. Somehow Tori Maia can draw the most erotic and captivating poses so that even an unbuttoned shirt can strike you. The explicitness is rather unmatched as well.

The Guild team Fuurinkazan did a good job on such a seemingly juxtaposed hardcore title. The only issue I had was with one piece of dialogue. “Honor Student President-san” rang out awkwardly to my English ears. I wish the manga community didn’t insist so strongly on Japanese honorifics because of ugly situations like this that makes you focus on the language instead.

I have a distinct feeling the story doesn’t get better from here. But I hope the other two volumes make it over in English.
