JESS MASTRIANI

was on vacation when Amber went missing. Most people blame Jess for Amber's brutal slaying, but how could Jess -- even with her psychic ability to find anyone, anywhere -- have stopped the cheerleader from turning up dead, without having known she was even missing?

When yet another cheerleader disappears, Jess has a chance to redeem herself. If she can just find the girl before it's too late, maybe Jess will finally have a chance to be part of the in crowd. Except that it's starting to look like being "in" might just get you -- not to mention your loved ones -- killed. So much for popularity.

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
This third entry in the series finds 16-year-old Jessica dragged into solving a mystery in her small town. One cheerleader has been murdered, another brutally attacked. The authorities are at a loss, but Jessica has ESP—a very specific kind that allows her to locate missing people. She doesn't like to use it because the ensuing publicity upsets her mentally ill brother; however, despite her insistence that her powers have disappeared, everyone from peers to lurking FBI agents knows that Jess can help. When a third teenage girl disappears, Jess overcomes her reluctance and plunges into action. The book ends with all immediate danger averted but with a pointer towards a future book where Jessica will again be pressured by the FBI to use her psychic powers. Peppered with television references, clothing brands, and an overuse of "like" and "you know," this book tries too hard to be teenage. Characterization is overshadowed by the forced vernacular style and by economically privileged assumptions within the narrative voice. Safe House will be most enjoyable to readers looking specifically for this genre of easy-to-read murder mystery with light romance. (1-800-Where-R-You, #3). Gr 9 Up-Jessica Mastriani, 16, has been having psychic visions ever since she was struck by lightning, earning her the nickname Lightning Girl at school. When a cheerleader disappears and is found dead, Jessica reluctantly uses her psychic abilities to catch the culprits. This third addition to a series by the author (aka Meg Cabot) of The Princess Diaries (HarperCollins, 2000) will be popular with teen girls. The author accurately captures the voice of the narrator, a girl just beyond the boundaries of the popular crowd. The blend of romance and suspense adds to the appeal, as does the protagonist's take-charge attitude in solving the crime. With so many series out there, librarians may want to purchase one or two of the volumes to see how they will be received.-Michele Capozzella, Chappaqua Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Meet the Author

Meg Cabot is the author of the #1 New York Times best-sellers All-American Girl and The Princess Diaries series, two of which have been made into major motion pictures by Disney. Meg is also the author of The Mediator series, the Airhead series, and many books for adults. She currently divides her time between Key West and New York City with her husband and one-eyed cat, Henrietta.

Biography

Meg Cabot knows that one of the best cures for feeling gawky and conspicuous is reading about someone who sticks out even more than you do. Her books for young adults invariably feature girls who have extraordinary powers that carry extraordinary burdens. Cabot's Princess Diaries series offers up the secret thoughts of Mia Thermopolis, who discovers at age 14 that she is actually the princess of a small European country. This revelation adds significantly to her extant concerns about crushes, friendships, school, and other matters falling under adolescent scrutiny.

Cabot, a native of Indiana weaned on Judy Blume and Barbara Cartland, was already a successful romance novelist (as Patricia Cabot) before she began writing for young adults; her alter-alter ego, Jenny Carroll, began a new series shortly after The Princess Diaries debuted. The Carroll books are divided between the Mediator series, starring a girl who can communicate with restless ghosts; and the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU books, in which a girl struck by lightning acquires the ability to locate missing people.

Cabot writes her books in a conspiratorial, first-person style that resonates with her readers. She has obviously kept a grip on the vernacular and the key issues of adolescence; but what makes her books so irresistible is the mixing of the mundane with the fantastic. After all, who wouldn't like to wake up and be a princess all of a sudden, or a seer? Cabot takes such offhand notions and roots them firmly in the details of average, middle-class American life. She has also tiptoed into mystery and paranormal suspense with other YA novels and series installments.

Cabot continues to write adult novels under various permutations of her given name (Meggin Patricia Cabot): from 19th-century historical romances to contemporary chick lit. And, as with her books for teens, these romances have earned praise for their lighthearted humor and well drawn characters.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Cabot:

"I am left handed."

"I hate tomatoes of any kind."

"I really wanted to be veterinarian, but I got a 410 on my math SATs."

"Writing used to be my hobby, but now that it's my job, I have no hobby -- except watching TV and laying around the pool reading US Weekly. I have tried many hobbies, such as knitting, Pilates, ballet, yoga, and guitar, but none of them have taken. So I guess I'm stuck with no hobby.

    very highly recomened :)

In the book Safe House, by Meg Cabot (writing as Jenny Carroll) Jessica Manstriani has been away for the summer and was unaware that a girl from her school had been murdered. The students from Jess's school are blaming her for the girl's death because the year before Jess had been struck by lightning which gave her super natural ability's to find missing people in her sleep. Jess is trying to convince everyone that her powers had vanished just as suddenly as they had come on. But no one believes her; the press had nicknamed her "Lightning Girl", and has been camped out on her front lawn for months. A girl who had been there when jess had found a young boy at camp is telling everyone that jess is lying about her powers. Jess is trying to start fresh this year with a new wardrobe and no fighting. Her plan backfires when a stuck up cheerleader, Heather, makes fun of jess's older brother Douglas, who had been sent home from collage for trying to kill himself a few years before. Everyone involved in the fight is sent to the guidance counselor's office, where jess has her first encounter with Mark Leskowski. Mark had been dating the girl, Amber, that was murdered and was now the leading suspect in the case of her death. Well Jess and Mark are out for pizza at Jess's family restaurant, the girl Heather disappears. The girls on the cheerleading squad tell Jess that if Heather ends up like Amber then she's to blame. Jess's "boyfriend" Rob helps Jess find Heather at an old abandoned house that had obviously been use for parties as well as a home to various animals. Jess gets curious about what kind of people use the house, and asks questions to anyone involved. the kidnappers don't like it and start threatening Jess though phone calls and burning down her family's restaurant , then one more missing girl, until then jess figures out who did all of it and why. But now Jess has a new worry, a new agent on her case and he's not as friendly as the old ones.

    I love this series!

This is one of my favorite book series! I love all of jenny carroll and mag cabot's writing! She is an amazing author. This is the third book about Jess, and in this book she is trying to find out what really happened to Amber, a cheerleader at her school that was murdered. Jess feels she has to cause it happened while she was away, and people at school are blaming her for Amber death cause they think Jesscould have used her psychic abilities to help find her. I only gave it four stars, cause I really liked the first two better. I thought Rob was a bit out of character in this book, but hey, at least he and Jess might be gettign together! I so want them to!! Sanctuary, the fourth book is coming out next month, and I'm gonna get it the day it comes out! Everyone else should to! I hope jenny/meg keeps writing this series cause it's the best!

1-800-Where-R-You is one of my fav series

Safe House IS the third book in the 1-800-Where-R-You series. If you look on her web site, www.jennycarroll.com, you can always get updates on her books and even see other books that she has written under other names (i.e. Princess Diary books). Jenny Carrol is a VERY good writter. She knows how to set the mood and get you into the book.
